Why is National Highway 109 called the road to death?

National Highway 109 is called the road of death because of its high altitude, bad weather, frequent road surface undulation and inclination.

National Highway 109 is located in Xizang Autonomous Region, China, and it passes through Hoh Xil Nature Reserve, which has certain risks. Hoh Xil is one of the nature reserves with the highest altitude and the most fragile ecological environment in the world, with complex geographical conditions, harsh climate, lack of infrastructure and rescue resources and difficult road conditions.

On this national highway, you may encounter the risk of natural disasters such as plateau hypoxia, extremely cold weather, mudslides and earthquakes. At the same time, the road conditions are poor, there are problems such as rugged, steep slopes and many bends, and the driving risk is great. Therefore, for ordinary vehicles and inexperienced drivers, the Hoh Xil 109 National Highway is dangerous.

National Highway 109 starts from Fuchengmen Bridge in Beijing's West Second Ring Road in the northeast and ends in Lhasa, Tibet in the southwest, with a total length of 3,922 kilometers. This is the best and safest road to Tibet, the first choice for most people to enter Tibet, and the only one of the four roads in China with passenger buses and plateau trains. The Qinghai-Tibet line is completely different from the mountains, valleys and rivers on the Sichuan-Tibet line and the Yunnan-Tibet line. Except for a few sections, the Qinghai-Tibet line is a straight line reaching the horizon.
