AC voltage regulator is an electronic device that can provide stable AC power supply for load. Please refer to DC regulated power supply for the parameters and quality indicators of AC regulated power supply. All kinds of electronic equipment need a relatively stable AC power supply, especially when computer technology is applied to various fields, the way of directly supplying power from AC power grid without taking any measures can no longer meet the needs.

AC regulated power supply has a wide range of uses, which can be roughly divided into the following six types:

① Ferroresonance AC voltage stabilizer: an AC voltage stabilizer with constant voltage-current characteristics, which is composed of a saturated choke and a corresponding capacitor. Magnetic saturation type is an early typical structure of this regulator. It has the advantages of simple structure, convenient manufacture, wide allowable variation range of input voltage, reliable operation and strong overload capacity. However, the waveform distortion is large and the stability is not high. The recently developed voltage stabilizing transformer is also a power supply device that uses the nonlinearity of electromagnetic components to realize voltage stabilization. The difference between it and magnetic saturation regulator lies in the different magnetic circuit structure, but the basic working principle is the same. It realizes the dual functions of voltage stabilization and voltage transformation on one iron core at the same time, so it is superior to ordinary power transformers and magnetic saturation regulators.

② Magnetic amplifier AC voltage regulator: a device that connects a magnetic amplifier in series with an autotransformer and changes the impedance of the magnetic amplifier through an electronic circuit to stabilize the output voltage. Its circuit form can be linear amplification or pulse width modulation. This voltage regulator has a closed-loop system with feedback control, so it has high stability and good output waveform. However, due to the use of a magnetic amplifier with large inertia, the recovery time is longer. Because of the self-coupling mode, the anti-interference ability is poor.

③ Sliding AC voltage regulator: a device that changes the position of sliding contact of transformer to stabilize the output voltage, that is, an automatic voltage regulating AC voltage regulator driven by servo motor. This voltage regulator has high efficiency, good output voltage waveform and no special requirements for load characteristics. But the stability is low and the recovery time is long.

(4) Inductive AC voltage stabilizer: A device for stabilizing the output AC voltage by changing the phase difference between the secondary voltage and the primary voltage of the transformer. It is similar to wound asynchronous motor in structure and induction voltage regulator in principle. It has wide voltage stabilizing range, good output voltage waveform and power up to several hundred kilowatts. However, due to the frequent locking of the rotor, the power consumption is high and the efficiency is low. In addition, because copper and iron use more materials, the output is less.

⑤ Thyristor AC voltage regulator: AC voltage regulator with thyristor as power regulating element. It has the advantages of high stability, fast response and no noise. However, due to the destruction of the mains waveform, it causes interference to communication equipment and electronic equipment.

⑥ Relay-type AC voltage regulator: As an AC voltage regulator, relay regulates the winding of autotransformer. It has the advantages of wide voltage stabilizing range, fast response speed and low production cost. Used for street lighting and more remote home use.

With the development of power supply technology, the following three new types of AC regulated power supplies appeared in 1980s:

① Compensated AC voltage regulator: also known as partial regulating voltage regulator. The additional voltage of the compensation transformer is connected in series between the power supply and the load. With the level of input voltage, the magnitude or polarity of additional voltage is changed by intermittent AC switch (contactor or thyristor) or continuous servo motor, and the excess (or deficiency) of input voltage is subtracted (or added), so as to achieve the purpose of voltage stabilization. The capacity of the compensation transformer is only about 1/7 of the output power, which has the advantages of simple structure and low cost, but its stability is not high.

(2) NC AC voltage regulator and step voltage regulator: The control circuit is composed of logic elements or microprocessors, and the primary turns of the transformer are converted according to the input voltage to stabilize the output voltage.

(3) Purified AC voltage regulator: It has good isolation function and can eliminate the peak interference from the power grid, so it is applied.
