Distribution is native to Bhutan, Sikkim, Nepal, northeastern India (Assam), Myanmar, Malaysia (North) and Indonesia (Sumatra and Java). China Yunnan (Ruili, Yingjiang, Lianshan and Longchuan) is wild at 800-1500m.

Characteristic leaves alternate, thick leathery, long stems, red buds and bracts. The growing environment is warm and humid, and it has strong adaptability to light. Fully water, like fertile and moist acidic soil, more resistant to water and humidity, and avoid drought.

Ornamental value all over the world (including northern China), it is often planted in greenhouses or indoors, potted for ornamental purposes, or planted in gardens, where one tree makes a forest.
