Under rated working conditions, the average velocity of coolant in the main pipeline must be less than 18.3m/s, and the selection of structural materials, dimensions and geometric shapes should be conducive to reducing the corrosion and erosion rate of the pipeline. The inner diameter of the main pipeline is generally in the range of 700 ~ 800 mm

In the design of some nuclear power plants, the hot section, transition section and cold section of the main pipeline adopt the same inner diameter; However, in many nuclear power plants, three different sizes of inner diameters are selected, and the transition section is usually the largest to improve the suction conditions of the main pump.

During the service period, the nuclear power main pipeline suffered from high temperature, high pressure, high flow of high pure water corrosion and high frequency fatigue, and the working environment was very bad. Therefore, the selected pipeline materials must have high strength, high toughness, good fatigue performance and corrosion resistance.

According to the different types of PWR, the materials used in the main pipeline are also different. For other types of reactors, heavy water reactors and sodium-cooled fast reactors are made of austenitic stainless steel. Generally, the main pipeline of gas-cooled reactor adopts carbon steel or low alloy steel, and the fourth generation nuclear power technology being developed, high temperature gas-cooled reactor adopts heat-resistant steel and high nickel alloy.
