Fushun Petroleum Institute, the predecessor of Liaoning University of Petrochemical Technology, was founded in 1950, which is the first petroleum industry school established after the founding of New China. On March 2, 2002, KLOC-0, People's Republic of China (PRC) and the Ministry of Education issued a document approving Fushun Petroleum Institute to be renamed Liaoning University of Petrochemical Technology.
