Where is Ai Lu, the former residence of Sung River?

When Chiang Kai-shek and Song Meiling got married, they couldn't find a satisfactory house for a while. They travel between Nanjing and Shanghai, and have no fixed residence in Shanghai, so they often stay in hotels. The following year, Song Meiling's eldest brother Song Ziwen finally found a garden house in Jiaye Ai Road (now No.9 Dongping Road) in the former French Concession. The owner was going to sell it, so he bought it and gave it to his sister Song Meiling. Later, Chiang Kai-shek and Song Meiling went to Shanghai and lived here, becoming Chiang Kai-shek's official residence in Shanghai. Chiang Kai-shek liked this French garden house very much.

There are four main rooms in Chiang Kai-shek's official residence, which are fake three floors, facing south and east, with Sha Meng style, rhombic flat tile sloping roof and water-brushed pebbles on the front. Windows, porches and corners are decorated with toothed imitation stone, and tiger windows are set on the roof, which makes the whole building look light, natural and unique. The facade of the villa is stepped from west to east, and the balcony and bottom gallery composed of three-heart arches are the remarkable features of this building. This villa consists of a main building and two annex buildings. The main building faces south and consists of three units with different shapes: East, West and Middle. The annex is located on both sides of the main building, which is the residence and studio of attendants and guards respectively. The ground floor on the east side is a large living room, which can accommodate more than 40 people. At that time, Song Meiling often showed American movies here and watched them with his entourage and Kong Lingkan, the nephew of Confucius' family. The second floor is the bedroom and bathroom of the Chiang couple. The bedroom is inlaid with small teak strips, and the wall decoration is very exquisite, especially the four flower-and-bird banners in spring, summer, autumn and winter, which are realistic in artistic conception. There is a back passage at the door of the bedroom, which can lead directly to the outside of the building in an emergency. Now the bedroom and bathroom are connected, but the back channels still exist. There is a balcony outside the bedroom, where Chiang Kai-shek and Song once overlooked the front garden.

There used to be a big garden covering an area of 2000 square meters in front of the official residence. According to Wang, Chiang Kai-shek's secretary, there are several big cedars rising from the ground in the big garden, which are full of vitality. There is a stream on the lawn in the south, which is 3 meters wide. There are large and small stones in the stream, and you can walk there. There are ponds, rockeries and small bridges on the east side of the garden, and cobblestones are paved around them to form paths. Now another building has been built on the west side of the garden, and the lawn and pond on the east side have retained their original features. In particular, a tall cedar on the edge of the lawn is still green and tall. There are two rockeries around the pond, one in front of the other, one large and one small, which are patchwork. The small rockery is small and exquisite, and the big rockery is slightly imposing, which is a school of China classical garden scenery. On the big rockery, there are stone benches and tables, and the word "Ai Lu" inscribed by Chiang Kai-shek is also erected. Chiang Kai-shek called the Guling Villa of Guanyin Bridge in Lushan Mountain "Beauty House", the villa of Xizi Lake in Hangzhou "Lu Cheng" and the garden house here "Love Lu", which shows that he is even more affectionate here.

More than half a century has passed, and the house remains the same, and the owner has changed. It's Building No.9 affiliated to Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and now it's leased to Changhua Textile Co., Ltd.
