The preparatory office of Shandong Provincial Museum was established in 1953, and the museum was officially built in 1954.

It is the earliest provincial museum in People's Republic of China (PRC).

Shandong Provincial Museum is the collection center of cultural relics and natural specimens in the province, with 265,438+00000 pieces of various cultural relics and specimens, accounting for about one third of the collection in the province.

At the beginning of the establishment of Shandong Provincial Museum, the collection sources mainly include the following aspects: First, a number of cultural relics, such as bronzes, calligraphy and painting, rare books and so on. , all transferred from the original collection preserved by Shandong Jinshi; Second, it received animal and plant specimens, paleontological fossils and various cultural relics collected by the former Jinan Guang Zhi Research Institute over the years; The third is to receive all kinds of cultural relics collected and protected by the Shandong People's Ancient Cultural Relics Management Committee in the former liberated areas during War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the Liberation War; In addition, it also received some cultural relics handed down from ancient times donated by the people in the 1950s and 1960s.

During the period from 1954 to 1980, Shandong Provincial Museum, as the only provincial-level cultural relics institution in Shandong, undertook the protection of the above-ground and underground cultural relics in Shandong, conducted a large number of field investigations and conducted a series of archaeological excavations. Important sites such as Dawenkou in Tai 'an, Yedian in Zoucheng, Yaoguanzhuang in Weifang, Donghaiyu in Rizhao, Shang Gang in Tengzhou, Shangzhuang in chiping, Zijingshan in Penglai, Daxinzhuang in Jinan, Subutun in Qingzhou, Qianren Cave in Yiyuan, and Jiulong Mountain in Qufu, Zhutan Tomb in Zoucheng, Langjiazhuang in Linzi, Jinque Mountain in Linyi, Zhangzishan in Linyi, Dadian in Junan and Yinan North have been excavated successively.
