The self-recovery of the system after a large-scale power outage is commonly known as black start. The so-called black start means that after the whole system is shut down due to a fault, the system is completely blacked out (excluding the isolated small power grid, which is still running) and is in a completely "black" state. Without the help of other networks, start the generator set with self-starting ability in the system, drive the generator set without self-starting ability, gradually expand the recovery scope of the system, and finally realize the recovery of the whole system. The key to black start is the start of power point. Compared with thermal power units and nuclear power units, hydro-generator units have the advantages of simple auxiliary equipment, less auxiliary power and fast start-up, and naturally become the first choice of black-start power supply. Black-start of hydropower station means that in the absence of auxiliary alternating current, only two kinds of energy stored in the power plant-electric energy stored in the DC system battery and hydraulic energy stored in the hydraulic system-are used to complete the self-start of the unit, restore auxiliary power internally, and cooperate with power grid dispatching externally to restore power grid operation. The black-start function of units is not only a necessary measure for power station to save itself from power failure, but also the need of power grid development.

After a large-scale blackout, taking black-start measures will greatly reduce the blackout time and restore the normal operation of the power grid as soon as possible. On September 26th, 2005, influenced by Typhoon "David" 18, a rare blackout occurred in Hainan Province. Hainan Power Grid Corporation immediately implemented the black-start scheme, which was the first "black-start" in China except for the drill.

Only 1 h25 min after the "black start" command was officially issued, a power plant announced that the "black start" was successful, and the system began to gradually restore power supply.
