Reporter’s impression
Zhu Xianwen seems to like reading very much: he went to college in 1979, and in 1986 he studied for 2 years as a postgraduate student majoring in mechanics at South China University of Technology before preparing to major in marketing. , but later the postgraduate career was terminated because the original supervisor firmly disagreed. In 1996, when domestic MBA programs were just emerging, he took the MBA course at Jinan University before anyone else. In 2001, he went abroad to study for an MBA. It is said that he is also studying for a doctorate at Jinan University School of Management.
It stands to reason that there is no necessary connection between the ability of professional managers and their academic qualifications, but Zhu Xianwen has been constantly looking for opportunities to study on campus. During the conversation, it was indeed discovered that he was more like a scholar than a businessman. Maybe a person needs to improve, and he must find time while constantly moving forward, and quietly sort out the experience he has gained in order to prepare for the next improvement. I never asked him whether he would choose to become a teacher on campus after quitting the workplace. But I think, with his experience, he should be qualified to take up the university forum.
Jianghu Experience
Many people have used "True Color" gel pens, which are almost a must-have in the office and the most commonly used stationery among students. In fact, the brand "Zhencai" comes from Lemei Stationery. It is this small product with a unit price of only one yuan that has made Lemei Stationery famous as the "King of Pen Making" in China.
Lemei published a large number of advertisements in the media called "Hero Posts" and began to recruit a large number of director and manager-level talents to the public, attracting the attention of many workplace elites. Why has Lemei Stationery become the number one in China’s stationery industry? What power does Lemei Stationery use to attract talents? Last week, we interviewed Zhu Xianwen, the head of China’s “King of Pen Making”, and had close contact with him and Lemei Stationery.
In 1994, Lemei Stationery produced China's first gel pen. Since then, China's writing tools have undergone revolutionary changes. Zhu Xianwen spent nearly 10 years successfully pushing the Lemei "True Color" brand to the top. Nowadays, the "True Color" series of gel pens produced by Lemei are almost a must-have item in the office and the most commonly used stationery among students.
Zhu Xianwen, winner of the 2012 Top Ten Outstanding Professional Managers in Guangdong Province and CEO of Shenzhen Paipai Doors and Windows Group Co., Ltd., has passed the "136" professional manager qualification certification of the Guangdong Professional Managers Association. System review reaches PM (Professional Manager) level standards.
The expert evaluation committee evaluated him as: he has rich experience in the industry and strong business management capabilities. Especially in the ten years of work of Lemei Group True Color Stationery, he has successfully turned a traditional industry into a to improve quality and become a leading enterprise in the industry.
From "small boss" to "big job"
Reporter: Before you came to Lemei Stationery, you were a senior engineer at the Guangdong Nonferrous Metal Processing Factory, contracting the factory's projects. How did you complete the transition from "little boss" to a professional manager?
Zhu Xianwen: In the late 1980s, many state-owned enterprises were reforming. As long as you dare to think and work hard, you can create opportunities to do it.
In 1988, my unit wanted to launch a new investment project within the company. I created an opportunity to propose a plan to the then factory director, raised funds to contract the project, and worked as a "little boss" for 10 years.
In 1999, after I completed the MBA program at Jinan University, I found that I was actually more suitable for "part-time work". The contract period happened to be up, so I didn't continue the contract, so I got Lemei Stationery by chance. Fortunately, my boss believed in me and was willing to boldly let me do it, allowing me to apply what I learned in the MBA to managing the company, and truly started to become a professional manager.
"Play" the company
Reporter: When you first joined Lemei, it was still a little-known small business. How did you "play" it?
Zhu Xianwen: Although Guangdong Lemei Stationery, invested by Hong Kong Lemei Group at that time, had begun to take shape with a market value of approximately 100 million, it was still in the early stage of a typical "product + sales" type enterprise. I believe that for an enterprise to enter the "product + sales + brand" model and thus enter a stage of rapid development, the most critical thing is team building. At that time, people often joked that "people who make cultural products are uneducated." We need to recruit talents. Faced with such a "talent shortage" situation in the stationery industry, I can only look to industries with more mature marketing to find talents.
Reporter: It is difficult to recruit people, and even more difficult to recruit capable people. At that time, Lemei Stationery was just starting out. How to attract excellent managers?
Zhu Xianwen: A big temple will naturally attract monks. But before the temple is big, we have to tell him the strategic plan of the company: what kind of temple we plan to build in the next ten years; what kind of foundation and resources do we have; how do we step by step become a mature manager? He has his own judgment ability. In addition to salary, he hopes to find a leader to help him improve his management skills. He hopes to find a promising company and can grow with it.
PhD who doesn’t want to graduate
Reporter: Your success is inseparable from your hard work. How have you continued to surpass yourself over the years?
Zhu Xianwen: Everyone must keep learning. I have never stopped reading. I started studying for a PhD in 2000 and have yet to graduate. In fact, as long as I submit my thesis, I can graduate at any time. I just didn't hand in the paper, and I continued to take the exam after it was due, because I didn't want to graduate and wanted to keep studying. The PhD diploma is actually useless to me, but the process of communicating with different teachers is very useful. I came here to study for a doctorate in management, which gave me an excuse to constantly communicate with high-level people and teachers from different majors.
Reporter: You also have an identity as the chairman and consultant of Guangzhou Huaying Enterprise Consulting Company. Wearing multiple hats, will you be overwhelmed?
Zhu Xianwen: Actually, I am a science and engineering geek with no special interests, so I have a lot of time to do what I want to do, and I am preparing to publish "Cut the Core of the Apple - Chinese Entrepreneur Shen Rui" Interpreting Steve Jobs. When we were young, our work and life could be very separate, but at my age, I think everything I do is a way of life. Being a CEO, writing books, working as a consultant, etc. are just some of the elements of my life. Being an entrepreneur consultant is also to share successful experiences and lessons with entrepreneurs, supplement their blind spots, and allow them to jump onto the bridge directly without having to cross the river by feeling for stones, pay less tuition, and grow quickly.
