A person, there are always some things, he will remember for a lifetime, lingering. So is Tan Tieniu.

Return to China resolutely

From 65438 to 0964, Tan Tieniu was born in a village in Chaling County, Hunan Province. He didn't have enough to eat three meals a day. The reality of poverty made him understand a truth from an early age: a few hoes can't dig out a rich life, and a pole can't pick out a modern countryside. The way out lies in mastering knowledge and relying on science. Tan Tieniu is persistent and determined to study hard. Mathematical formulas are deduced under kerosene lamps, English words are recited on hillsides, and Chinese texts are recited by scalpers. 1978 participated in the county-wide senior high school entrance examination, and the county-wide secondary school unified examination, with the former being the first in the county and the latter the second. He could have chosen to go to high school according to his own wishes. However, in the face of the reality that tuition and fees are not expensive and family life is tight, he has to choose to go to a secondary school for employment. At this critical moment of life, Chaling No.1 Middle School (178 class) made an exception to reduce his tuition and fees and gave him the highest grant. The kindness of the government and people in his hometown has made him remember it all his life and dare not forget it. 1980 was admitted to Xi Jiaotong University. 1985, Tan Tieniu, 2 1 year-old, was funded by the Ministry of Education to study in the world-famous University of London, London Imperial College London, and successfully completed her master's and doctoral studies. During the period of 1994, Tan Tieniu was awarded a tenured professorship by the University of Reading, a famous British university. His scientific research results appeared on BBC TV programs, and he was elected as the first non-British executive director of the British Society for Machine Vision and Pattern Recognition. His wife, Wenhua, also found a lifelong position at Reading University.

The longer you go abroad, the stronger your sense of serving your country. After studying abroad for 65,438+03 years, Tan Tieniu has an enviable tenure, generous annual salary, his own car and a house. However, a heart full of gratitude and return is very strong, which makes him unable to settle down in life in Britain. He always cares about the information from the motherland and looks for opportunities to work in China. Finally, after being selected into the "Hundred Talents Program" of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to recruit outstanding overseas scientific and technological talents, he and his wife resolutely resigned their lifelong positions at the University of Reading, sold their cars and houses, and returned to the motherland with their only son who just turned one year old.

As an outstanding young scientist, Tan Tieniu was appointed as the director of the State Key Laboratory of Pattern Recognition and assistant to the director of automation shortly after 1998 returned to work.

At the beginning of his return to China, in order to devote himself to scientific research, Tan Tieniu discussed with his wife and decided not to settle in Beijing for the time being, and sent his wife and children to Xi 'an's in-laws. From then on, in the silent middle of the night, on the path leading to the Zhongguancun guest apartment in the Entrepreneurship Institute, a person acted alone. He is Tan Tieniu. He can only drive a car, but he can't ride a bike.

In terms of scientific research, Tan Tieniu has opened up new scientific directions after returning to China, such as computer vision monitoring of dynamic scenes, identity recognition based on human biological characteristics, digital multimedia data watermarking, etc. These are all frontier fields in the world, and the industrialization of high-tech has broad prospects. Because these areas are of strategic significance to national development, some key technologies are blocked abroad. In order to break through the blockade, Tan Tieniu led the research team to make full use of the comprehensive advantages of optics, machinery and electricity of the Institute, and worked hard to develop a software and hardware demonstration system with independent intellectual property rights, and obtained and applied for a number of patents. These studies are of great significance to the anti-counterfeiting of certificates, currencies, trademarks and copyrights and even to the safety of family, society and national defense.

Tan Tieniu, 37, is very active in scientific research. He has served as the chairman of some international professional conferences on the international scientific stage, joined international academic organizations and served as the editorial board of international authoritative journals. At present, he has published more than 20 papers/kloc-0 in important international academic journals and international conferences, and has been authorized and applied for many patents.

In June 2000, to his surprise, China Academy of Sciences asked him to be the director of the Institute. As a large research institute under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the director of the Institute of Automation has never been such a young scientist. Undoubtedly, the burden before him is very heavy. Tan Tieniu thought it over, after all, it would affect his time for scientific research, but in the end he bravely shouldered the burden. When asked about his initial choice today, he can calmly answer: "If the work of the institute is done well and more first-class scientists emerge in the institute, I will feel more gratified." In fact, in addition to being a good director, Tan Tieniu is still working hard in the front line to do scientific research. As a director, it is impossible to grasp the development direction of the subject well without making achievements in scientific research. Tan Tieniu is very clear about this truth.

After taking over as the director, Tan Tieniu led the young leading group, and with the solid work of the broad masses of employees, formulated the overall development idea of the Institute of Automation, determined to build the Institute of Automation into an internationally renowned institute with standardization, high efficiency, democracy, harmony, beautiful environment, strong scientific and technological innovation ability and strong sustainable development ability. To this end, he and the leading group vigorously advocated the "six sons" work style of "putting down the shelf, using more brains, taking steps, thinking less about tickets, and working wholeheartedly for the yard of the automation institute".

When it comes to the future development of the Institute, Tan Tieniu attaches great importance to creating a comfortable environment for scientific and technological personnel in the Institute. He said that mankind is entering the era of knowledge economy, which is different from the era of agricultural economy and industrial economy. They mainly rely on intelligence to promote social progress, rather than land and machinery, and the "switch" of giving full play to intelligence is people's mood. If they are in a good mood, they will certainly do a good job. Therefore, the institute should strive to create satisfactory interpersonal relationships, comfortable working environment and satisfactory living conditions for everyone.

Tan Tieniu believes that as long as we create a good environment for the Institute of Automation, we will not worry about the first-class scientific research results, nor will we worry that the Institute of Automation will become an internationally renowned national first-class research institute.

After returning home, Tan Tieniu witnessed the rapid development of the motherland's construction, especially the success of Beijing's bid for the Olympic Games, and the motherland's international status was improving day by day. Considering his scientific research work and the future development prospect of the institute, he feels very confident. Talking about these feelings, he said: "After returning to China, I have a sense of belonging, career and responsibility that I have never had before. Life feels more fulfilling and my heart is more practical. " (Originally published in Guangming Daily in 2002)
