How to write extra points on your resume for experience other than entry-level work?

For most students who do not have rich internship experience, experience outside of work becomes crucial. For HR, this is the only basis they can use on their resume to judge whether a candidate is suitable for the job.

Some students may ask, I didn’t seem to do much in college other than playing Douyin and watching my brothers and sisters. I can’t write about these experiences, right?

Since many students’ experiences in college are too broad, I will first define that experience outside of work includes: 1. Student organizations and off-campus organizations initiated or participated in; 2. Organized or participated in Events and Activities.

The abilities best demonstrated by experiences outside of work are leadership and organizational skills, which are important abilities in any job. Whether it is a student organization or an event, if you are the sponsor, it basically means that you are a person with certain leadership and organizational skills. If you are a small leader of a well-known organization (such as "volunteer group leader", "XX activity initiator"), or a leadership position such as "founder", "initiator", "vice chairman" of a smaller organization , then remember to write these experiences in your resume. These experiences may make you stand out and help you get your favorite job opportunities.

In addition, if you are applying for a job at a foreign company or an Internet company, I suggest you try to write down your experience in activities other than work, because compared to state-owned enterprises, foreign companies and Internet companies value the overall quality of candidates more. These experiences become more important.

So how should these experiences be written? Mainly follow three principles:

1. Principle of simplification

Generally, experience outside of work involves more complicated things, so the content must not be too long, 1-3 paragraphs Activity experience is enough to reflect the applicant's ability. Like the requirements of other experience parts, you must focus on the key points and highlight leadership and organizational abilities. Try not to write about short-term, trivial, and unimportant experiences such as "Participated in a 2-day forum and a week-long activity."

2. Relevance principle

Another important principle is to give priority to filling in experience related to the position you are applying for. If you are applying for an investment banking or finance position, you can write on behalf of a certain financial student organization. You have attended a large event, but it is not recommended to write that you founded the school's first astronomy club, because the relevance is too low (unless the organization has some special achievements worth showing off).

3. Principle of Accuracy

The description of the experience must be detailed and accurate. The background, process, and results of the experience must be written clearly, and your abilities can be more clearly demonstrated through quantitative results. .

What should I do if I have no experience in activities outside of work?

Not everyone has participated in a bunch of clubs or started an activity or organization with some friends. Maybe you are not interested in these. If you have had internship experience before and your resume is long enough (can basically fill a page), you can skip or delete this section.

What should I do if I have no activity experience or internship experience and my resume is blank?

I strongly recommend that you join an organization, participate in organizing an event, or even create an organization and take the lead in launching a large-scale event. It is not only to make your resume look better, but also to train yourself. Good opportunities, and good job opportunities may appear in these activities~
