Laocoon, marble group portrait, found in Rhode Island, height 184 cm. According to the research of western archaeologists, it was made by the sculptor Aki Sandroos of Rhode Island and his sons Polito Ross and Adinandoros in the middle of BC 1 century. Laocoon, the old priest of Apollo Temple, warned Troy not to pull Troy into the city for fear of falling into a trap. This angered Athena and the gods to destroy Troy. Athena sent two serpents to kill laocoon and his son (see Homer's Iliad). This is a tragedy of the conflict between man and god. As a priest, it is his duty to predict the coming of disaster, but he violated God's will and was punished. Laocoon's statue shows extreme physical pain. However, this kind of physical pain is more than inner excitement, that is to say, the dramatic performance of the three snake-ridden images exceeds the revelation of their spiritual activities. They lack a kind of passion arising from the struggle of the soul, and their works are not profound and implicit enough, only the superficial strength and structural beauty in modeling.

The aesthetic significance of "laocoon" is undeniable, because we have seen the extensive knowledge of ancient sculptors in reflecting human spiritual life: its pyramid-like composition, the rhythmic handling of characters' limbs, and the contrast between the rhythm of snakes and the staggered shapes of arms.
