Lanzhou Petrochemical Vocational and Technical College was founded in 1956. Its predecessor is two national key middle schools (Lanzhou Petroleum School and Lanzhou Chemical School) directly under the Ministry of Petroleum and Chemical Industry, and two staff universities (Lanlian Staff University and Lanhua Staff University) of Lanzhou Petrochemical General Factory and Lanzhou Chemical Company.

1999, approved by the Ministry of Education, the school was restructured into Lanzhou Petrochemical Vocational and Technical College, becoming the first independent higher vocational and technical college in Gansu Province. In 2006, the college was identified by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance as one of the first batch of 28 national key construction demonstration higher vocational colleges.

In February, 2002, the college was designated as a national key construction demonstration higher vocational and technical college by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance. In 2004, the College was identified by the Ministry of Education as two national training bases for talents with skills in short supply, namely, CNC technology application specialty and computer applications and software technology specialty.

In September, 2005, the college passed the talent training level evaluation organized by the Provincial Department of Education, and became the first higher vocational college in Gansu Province to be rated as excellent. At the same time, it successfully passed the ISO900 1:2000 international quality management system certification. In 2006, the college was identified by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance as one of the first batch of 28 national demonstration higher vocational colleges.
