What are the courses in international schools (2)
Let's talk about DP before A-level.
Before, I saw many parents asking whether it is better to learn IB or AP. Comparing the IB and AP published by Baidu on the Internet, it actually refers to DP, which is an authentic IB preparatory course, equivalent to 1 1, 12. There is no age limit, and it is IB international study program of IB international junior high school and senior high school. It consists of six subject courses and three core courses.
Students must choose six courses to study. The six groups are 1 Chinese A, 2 Chinese B, 3 people and society, 4 experimental science, 5 mathematics and computer, 6 art ... Among the six subjects selected by students, at least three or four subjects must reach the highest level, and other subjects must reach the standard level.
The three core courses are: TOK Theory of Knowledge, which cultivates students' inquiry ability and critical thinking ability; CAS, "Creation, Action and Service" is an activity class, which focuses on cultivating students' ability of organization and planning and social activities. EE, "Extended Thesis", aims to cultivate students' writing ability, and submit at least 4,000-word papers to IBO upon graduation.
From here, we can see that it is complete with CP series courses in junior high school and IGCSE courses in senior high school, and the curriculum of DP is very scientific and perfect. After completing the DP course, the number of words is about 8000. Seven points for all subjects and three points for core courses, with a total score of 45.
It takes 40 points to apply for a rattan school, 38 points for Cambridge and 42 points for Oxford. Most students' graduation scores are above 32, and the admission score of London University Medical College is 32.
Like AP, DP credits can also be exchanged for university credits. MIT IB can exchange 6 points for 12 first-class credits, and others can exchange 6 points for 9 first-class credits of literature subjects. Yale University and Princeton University IB 6 points can be directly used for leapfrog or early graduation.
Why is it gradually replaced by A-LEVEL? I think it may still be a matter of difficulty and time. IB educational institutions stipulate that advanced courses must have at least 240 hours, general courses 150 hours, core courses 150 hours and CAS social activities 150 hours. Therefore, in the case of other standardized examinations, schools can't have much time to arrange DP subjects, so they can only choose the relatively fast ALEVEL course.
A Level is a national education course in Britain, and it is also the main examination course for British students before entering universities.
Level 1 must be completed before 18 years old. The result is equivalent to the "national college entrance examination" in China, and it is also the national college entrance examination in Singapore. A mother told me that she was going to send her children to IB to take the ALEVEL exam. This statement is wrong. It's just the British college entrance examination.
A-Level education lasts for two years, which is equivalent to 1 1, 12 in China. But students with strong ability can sometimes finish it in a shorter time. The first year is called AS, which requires four courses and an AS certificate after passing the examination. The second year is called A2. Reduce one of the previous four courses and keep three. After passing the exam, I got a complete A-level certificate.
British students can enter the university by passing the exam, and basically they apply for it. Does this look much simpler than DP? Its achievements can be applied not only to universities in English-speaking countries, but also to universities in non-English-speaking countries in the European Union.
A Level offers 70 courses, but all universities in the UK, including Oxford and Cambridge, only need three or four courses. It can take two math courses. Most students in China are very good at mathematics, so choosing the first level is basically equivalent to stepping into a world famous school. A Level has a stable examination mode, which is unified by Cambridge University in proposition, marking, global examination time and grading standards, and its authority is recognized by the world.
Its standardized features make it easy for China students who are good at exams to win. The score of ABCDE is divided into five grades. This will not affect students' evaluation of small mistakes in the exam. There are two exams every year, and you can submit good grades to apply for a university. The biggest advantage of A Level is that it doesn't require compulsory liberal arts like DP, and courses with high requirements for English, such as literature, economics, history and religion, can basically be avoided, so that China students can make up for the English gap.
Foreign admission is not divided into arts and sciences. In fact, if you don't take the liberal arts exam, you can also apply for the university science major. If you get three D's in the A-Level exam, you can enter an ordinary university. If you get three B's, you can enter a university with good scientific research level, surpassing China, Peking University and Tsinghua. If you get three or four A's, you have the basic qualifications to enter the top universities in the world, including Oxford and Cambridge. This is also the reason why many international schools give up DP in the preparatory stage and choose ALEVEL instead. Obviously, it's much easier. However, in recent years, the voice of Allerville's reform is getting louder and louder, and the British government has already begun to reform. Refer to DP.
At present, there is also an international course called IFY, and Chinese is called International Preparatory Course.
It is a pre-university course developed by NCC UK National Computing Education Center, with a history of more than 40 years. Courses include: English language, math skills, IT skills, overseas culture, learning and communication skills, computer foundation and enterprise management foundation.
Its advantage is seamless connection, because NCC has signed cooperation agreements with universities in Britain, the United States, Canada, Australia and other countries, and qualified IFY graduates can directly enter these universities. Including Macquarie University in Australia and Australian National University; Liverpool University, Birmingham University, Manchester University, etc.
Its study form is three plus one, or two plus two, that is, two years in China, two years in the target university, or three years in China and one year in the target university. The biggest advantage of this course is that NCC holds a job fair in Britain or Australia every year (including Fortune 500 companies). During the holding process, it will provide a special time for students with IFY to find internship opportunities. Therefore, domestic and international schools choose to offer this course in order to divert students and teach students in accordance with their aptitude. After all, not every child can get into a top university. This course allows ordinary children to directly enter the universities that have signed agreements, which is actually a very good result, so there are many parents to choose from in the international schools before their children.
I know about these international courses because the courses I mentioned above are offered by the international schools where my children studied before, which gives each child a lot of room for growth.
However, my observation is that the earlier children enter international schools, the better their grades will be. The most golden period of international courses is the CP course in junior high school, because it is also a crucial period for children to form a world outlook and develop study habits. Moreover, IB graduated from junior high school in 8th grade, which can be well connected with American high schools, and will not fall into the thinking that domestic parents always want their children to go to American high schools after finishing junior high school in the ninth grade. Moreover, after entering high school, the school will spend a lot of time on standardized examinations to ensure the results of the examination, which will seriously affect the study of normal courses. It can be used to brush questions.
This also became the reason why I gave up studying in an international high school and went to an American high school. After all, studying is not only for college entrance examination, but also a reasonable secondary education is more important.
Another reason is the teachers in international schools. A really good teacher doesn't come to teach in Wan Li. Although all schools are taught by foreign teachers, they are highly mobile. They change teachers every year, and this school can't control them. Some teachers just make soy sauce. The child said that he thought the teacher was awesome, and the teacher also thought the child was awesome. He thinks the teacher is stupid, and the teacher thinks the child is even more stupid.
This problem was only compared when the children went to Gaomei, probably because of Gaomei's teaching system, but the children obviously felt that the local teachers were more interested in giving lectures and their grades were better than those in China. If parents decide to transfer to an international school, one is whether the teaching materials are authentic, the other is whether the curriculum is enough, and the third is the level and mobility of teachers.
