Xinjiang Medical University, located in Urumqi, Xinjiang, is the only independent medical college in Xinjiang. It is a demonstration base for colleges and universities jointly established by provincial ministries and commissions, a pilot university for excellent doctoral education and training programs, a university for overseas students to receive scholarships from the China government, and the first batch of universities in the autonomous region to study in Xinjiang. The school was formerly known as Xinjiang Medical College and Xinjiang College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which were founded in 1954 and 1946 and 1998 respectively. In June, Xinjiang Medical College and Xinjiang College of Traditional Chinese Medicine merged to form Xinjiang Medical University.
