Nenjiang city is named after Nenjiang. Nenjiang River was called "Difficult Water", "Nahe River" and "Brain Wenjiang River" in ancient times. In the early Qing Dynasty, it was called Nonimulun (Mongolian, Nonimulun means "green" and Mulun means "river"), and in the middle Qing Dynasty it was called Nenjiang.

In the 29th year of Emperor Kangxi of Qing Dynasty (1690), Heilongjiang General Yamen was moved from Aihui City to Morgan City.
