With the approval of the State Council, the third week of September every year is the National Publicity Week for Promoting Putonghua.

The National Putonghua Promotion Week was approved by Premier the State Council's office meeting on 1997 and held once a year from 1998. The Ministry of Education, the State Language Committee and relevant departments formed a leading group for Putonghua Promotion Week, which was organized and implemented by the Ministry.
