In 2005, Peng Shaobing won the Best Paper Award from the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). According to the research of "the influence of global climate change on agriculture, environment and human beings", Peng Shaobing found that during the rice growing period, the rice yield decreased by 1 0% for every increase of the average minimum temperature at night. This great discovery is the result of more than 20 rice experiments in Peng Shaobing 12 years. During the period of 1999 ~ 200 1 year, the yield of the experimental field was reduced for three consecutive years. In nearly 10 years, Peng Shaobing encountered this situation for the first time. At first, Peng Shaobing thought it was his assistants who relaxed the management of Daejeon. After careful inquiry, I found that it was not the case. He looked at the meteorological data in recent years and found no problems. One day, he suddenly thought of the temperature change at night. The results show that the average minimum temperature at night has increased by 1 ~ 2℃ in the past few years. Correlation analysis shows that the influence of temperature change in the evening on crop yield is greater than that of light intensity. He also consulted the meteorological data of Rice Institute 1979 to 2003, and found that in the past 24 years, the temperature rose three times as fast in the evening as in the daytime.
Peng Shaobing said that there are many international controversies about the impact of atmospheric changes, especially temperature rise, on crop production. Most studies on the effects of global warming on crop growth and yield mainly focus on the change of day and night average temperature. Based on the field test results of 12 years, this paper quantitatively analyzed the influence of nighttime temperature rise on crop yield for the first time.
In the "2004 Global 100 Important Scientific Papers" selected by Discovery magazine, this article ranks 68th. Peng Shaobing said that after the article came out, their influence was unexpected. They are further studying the internal mechanism of night temperature affecting rice yield and possible genetic improvement ways, so as to provide theoretical basis for solving the problem of rice yield reduction caused by night temperature increase through breeding.
In fact, long before this research achievement was released, Peng Shaobing had made outstanding achievements in crop physiology and breeding research, and won the "Outstanding Young Scientist Award" awarded by CGIAR with 1996. In addition, it was selected as an "outstanding member" by the American Agricultural Society in 2004 and an "outstanding member" by the American Crop Society in 2005, which is the highest honor granted to members. In 2005, he was hired as a chair professor by Huazhong Agricultural University.
