Is the Yunnan-Myanmar Highway still in use? Thank you, everyone.
Brief introduction of Yunnan-Myanmar Highway:
Yunnan-Myanmar Highway, that is, the highway from Yunnan, China to Myanmar. The construction of Yunnan-Myanmar Highway started at 1938. The highway is connected with Myanmar Central Railway, and goes directly to Yangon Port, the former capital of Myanmar. The Yunnan-Myanmar Highway was originally built urgently to transport strategic materials purchased by the China government abroad and assisted by the international community. With the Japanese invasion of Vietnam, the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway was interrupted, and the Yunnan-Myanmar Highway soon became the only transportation channel between China and the outside world. This is an international passage that was born in the bonfire of War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. This is an international passage jointly built by the people of all ethnic groups in western Yunnan, and the Yunnan-Myanmar Highway played an important role in the Second World War.
Route planning:
According to the administrative division of Yunnan Province in China today, the Yunnan-Myanmar Highway passes through Kunming, Anning, Lufeng, Chuxiong, Nanhua, Xiangyun, Dali, Yangbi Yi Autonomous County, Yongping, Baoshan, Longling, mangshi and Ruili.
The terrain in Yunnan is complex, and mountains and rivers have become a difficult problem for Yunnan-Myanmar highway to cross. The main rivers that Yunnan-Myanmar Highway crosses are: Tanglangchuan, Lv Zhi, Longchuan River, Yangbi River, Lancang River and Nujiang River. The mountains we pass through are Diancang Mountain, Nvshan Mountain and Gaoligong Mountain.
Historical value:
The Yunnan-Myanmar Highway, which runs through the hardest mountainous area in China and the fastest river in China, winds for thousands of kilometers, and is the out-and-out lifeline of the Chinese nation. It is a transportation corridor consisting of Yunnan-Myanmar Highway, Hump Route and China-India Highway, which supports all the war preparation materials and economic supplies in China's anti-Japanese battlefield.
Weapons and equipment needed by millions of troops in the early days of the Anti-Japanese War; All kinds of materials needed to maintain economic operation; Countless basic consumer goods needed by people who moved to the rear area, in short, all the materials needed to maintain the whole anti-Japanese war at that time, could not be produced in China, so it was transported into the rear area by this lifeline.
The Yunnan-Myanmar Highway also played an invisible role, which changed the course of the war. So that the Japanese originally wanted to defeat China's army head-on, forcing the National Government to yield. However, due to the external access including the Yunnan-Myanmar Highway, the Japanese army abandoned the original plan and blocked China's external access from the Vietnamese coast, northwest China and Myanmar. This gives tired China soldiers and civilians a breathing space.
Social evaluation:
There is a passage in Li Zongren's memoirs that he thinks that the opening of the Yunnan-Myanmar Highway by the National Government is a road that goes further and further. He believes that if Guangzhou Bay (now Zhanjiang, Guangdong Province, formerly known as the French colony) is occupied, all US military supplies in the Pacific Ocean can be transported through Guangzhou Bay, so that the whole war of resistance will become very easy. Where is easy? From the situation analysis, all the Japanese coastlines are arranged in a long snake shape. If you fight the Japanese army in Myanmar, then the Japanese army in Myanmar will shrink, and the smaller the contraction, the harder it is to fight. Li Zongren suggested that Guangzhou Bay was in the middle of a long snake, so I would cut off the Japanese army and meet the supply of American troops in the Pacific Ocean, which would make the whole of War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression much easier, but his plan was not accepted by Chiang Kai-shek. To tell the truth, Chiang Kai-shek acted out of his own selfishness. It's not that he can't see that this strategy is very good, but he is afraid that the US military will transport military aid materials from Guangzhou Bay and benefit from Guangxi. Because Guangxi is close to Guangzhou Bay, and thanks to the heavily armed Guangxi, Chiang Kai-shek will not be happy to see it, so Chiang Kai-shek rejected this plan. He used 50 divisions to open the Yunnan-Myanmar Highway.
