Gear hobbing is the principle of gear machining by generating method. Machining pairs of wheels with hob is equivalent to the meshing of a pair of staggered spiral wheels. Hobbing belongs to generating method, which can be regarded as rack-and-pinion transmission without meshing clearance. Every gear hobbing revolution is equivalent to the rack moving a cutter tooth in the normal direction, and the continuous transmission of hob is like an infinite rack moving continuously. When the hob and the hobbing blank are forced to mesh and drive in strict accordance with the transmission ratio of the rack and pinion, the envelope of the hob teeth in a series of positions forms the involute tooth profile of the workpiece. Through the vertical feed of hob, the required involute profile can be rolled out.
