What major recruits GIS students?

In fact, this is a very painful problem.

This answer can make people laugh. Although we admit that the application of GIS is becoming more and more common, the understanding of such a relatively new profession that has developed for many years is far from enough. For example, when I graduated from college, I worked as an intern in an Internet company. At that time, they were making a public security GIS system. I told my colleague that I studied GIS, and he exclaimed that I had this major. Of course, with the promotion of the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping in recent years and the increasing awareness of GIS in various industries, the application of geographic information seems to usher in a new spring. Therefore, for GIS students, there is no reason to be pessimistic. At present, GIS is not much better, or at least not much worse. As long as you learn your major well, finding a good job is not a problem.

Well, since everyone has been saying that there are many GIS in the past two years, many units need people in this field. Since all over the world are recruiting talents in GIS, what does this mean? Where there are many, here are some I think are more reliable, not encyclopedias, just some directions, hoping to help you open your mind and not be confined to an alley.

Undoubtedly, in the current situation, the national examination is still the first choice for many people once and for all. There will always be countless people who sign up for the national civil service examination, and those who are less than countless people will fail, but this can't stop the enthusiasm of countless fresh graduates.

For students majoring in GIS, those who have passed the national examination may know that only a few positions will be clearly marked as GIS majors every year. For example, there was a position in the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping last year. Then there are two choices: 1, which is not limited to majors; 2. Competing for these two positions with students majoring in GIS from all over the country (including those who have already worked). There is really nothing to say about these two options. For students who are determined to become national civil servants and die, they should review their exams and applications, do more questions, burn incense and pray that there are no back door candidates (small probability events) or that the other party's background is not hard.

The scope of institutions is too wide, because God knows how many institutions there are in this magical land. The employment options that can be used as GIS majors are as follows:

1, university. Of course, under the current situation that highly educated talents emerge one after another, the possibility that graduate students can become teachers in colleges and universities has been reduced to a considerable extent, and of course, doctoral graduation is not much bigger than the former. But with more non-key universities offering GIS courses, you will still find some opportunities as long as you are willing to work hard.

2. Scientific research institutes. There are fewer and fewer opportunities to stay in scientific research institutes. In one case, I finished my master's degree, doctor's degree and postdoctoral degree in a research institute and then stayed. Of course, it is more reliable that researchers and professors in many research institutes now have their own companies, and if they can work in these companies after graduation. Because they have a good source of projects, these companies are well paid. After all, they earn money from the country and have a good working atmosphere.

The research institutes mentioned above are not only the Institute of Geography and the Institute of Remote Sensing of Chinese Academy of Sciences, but also some environmental research institutes, meteorological research institutes, hydrological research institutes, geological research institutes, lake research institutes and even animal research institutes, all of which will have GIS applications.

3. Subordinate units of Bureau of Land and Resources, Bureau of Surveying and Mapping, Seismological Bureau and Environment Bureau, various survey institutes, surveying and mapping institutes, planning institutes, geographic information centers, data processing centers, map publishing houses, etc. All kinds of institutions that are closely related to GIS, and industries such as coal, geology, petroleum, telecommunications, communication and meteorology seem to have little to do with GIS. These ordinary freshmen may not pay much attention to it, but GIS has been widely used in these industries, so they also have a large demand for GIS talents.

This is what we usually call a public institution, which is characterized by many national projects, so the treatment is generally better. In addition to the unified examination and teacher recommendation, the way to enter these units is to get internship opportunities in these units before graduation. It should also be noted that these institutions are slowly starting the journey of restructuring. No one knows whether these institutions will have the so-called establishment in ten years, but it is much less difficult to enter these institutions through the unified examination than to take the national or provincial civil service examination.

It seems that there are not many large state-owned enterprises that can be related to GIS, but often there are some professional companies and software companies at the lower level of these state-owned enterprises, so there is a lot of demand for GIS, such as China Aerospace, China Airlines, China Minmetals, China Coal, and even China Post, China Petroleum, China Petrochemical, State Grid and China Telecom. For example, NavInfo is a listed company under China Aerospace.

Under the current sITuation that GIS is mainly software, it is not surprising that IT enterprises classify GIS into IT field. Therefore, when GIS is used more and more, these IT enterprises will also want to expand their fields through GIS. Famous software companies such as Huawei, as well as some relatively small software and network companies, have been recruiting GIS and related professionals on a large scale in the past two years.

In addition to software companies, due to the application of electronic maps, many Internet companies have also begun to recruit GIS professionals, such as Microsoft, Baidu, Tencent, Sina, Sohu, Alibaba and so on. More importantly, the salaries of these companies are better than those of ordinary companies. And with the development of mobile Internet, some companies that want to rely on mobile Internet maps have gradually developed. Although most of them are small at present, who knows whether they will be as successful as Foursquare in a few years?
