After the establishment of the college, the college has made adjustments and reforms in the direction of Japanese majors. It now has four undergraduate majors: Japanese language and culture, Japanese for economics and trade, Japanese-Korean bilingualism, and oral interpretation and simultaneous interpretation. Among them, the direction of oral interpretation and simultaneous interpretation was started at the same time as Beijing International Studies University in 2005. It should be regarded as a pioneering professional direction among the same majors in the country. The college has a Japanese Language and Culture Research Center, which has a Japanese resource room managed by students independently with a collection of nearly 10,000 books. In 2004, the college began to cooperate with the School of Humanities to recruit master's degree students in Japanese cultural history. In 2005, it obtained the right to award master's degrees in foreign linguistics and applied linguistics. It is the standing director school of the China Japanese Language Teaching Research Association, the China Japan History Society, the China Business Japanese Research Association, and the governing school of the Translators Association of China.

Teachers in this major have been constantly making progress in scientific research. They have published more than 120 academic papers at home and abroad, published many monographs and textbooks, and won the "Song Qingling Foundation" and "Sun Pinghua Japanese Studies Research Award Fund" Excellent book award and multiple provincial and municipal scientific research awards. One National Social Science Youth Fund project and 5 provincial, ministerial and municipal projects are under research. The college attaches great importance to academic exchange activities. While actively participating in domestic and foreign academic conferences and inviting domestic and foreign experts and scholars to give lectures in the college, it also held the first International Symposium on China, Japan, Korea, and Japanese Language and Culture Research in July 2004, which was attended by Readers praised it as a large-scale, high-level and well-organized classical society. After holding a large-scale academic exchange event with the University of Tsukuba in Japan in 2005, the institute successfully held the Second International Symposium on Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Japanese Language and Culture Studies from August 20 to 23, 2007. The praise of more than 180 experts and scholars from Japan, South Korea and Taiwan has increased the international influence of this major. According to data from the first issue of 2008 of the "Evaluation and Management" magazine sponsored by the China Scientific Evaluation Research Center and the School of Educational Science of Wuhan University, the Japanese major of Dalian University has risen to the 49th place in the national ranking of Japanese majors.
