If you apply for a sailor on duty in the unlimited navigation area, you need to sign a shipping company to apply for a seaman's card for you. Then contact the unit to get on board for probation, and after six months of probation, apply to the crew management department of the Maritime Safety Administration for the Certificate of Competency for Seafarers on Duty with relevant documents. After getting the certificate of competency, you can be a sailor on duty on board.

The ship's working departments are divided into deck department, engine department and service department, with captain positions respectively. The deck department has first mate, second mate, third mate and sailors on duty; The engine department has chief engineer, chief engineer, chief engineer and mechanic on duty; The service department has waiters, chefs, second chefs and waiters. Different positions have different requirements. When students from maritime colleges graduate, or ordinary crew members apply to become officers, they need to take the national unified examination for the certificate of competency of officers. The subjects that marine ship driving majors take part in the national unified examination are: navigation, ship duty and collision avoidance, maritime English, ship structure and equipment, maritime meteorology and oceanography, maritime cargo transportation and ship management; The subjects that marine engineering management majors take part in the national unified examination are: main propulsion power plant, marine auxiliary machinery, marine English, marine electricity, marine engineering maintenance, marine engineering foundation and marine engineering management (individual schools only need to take the first three courses of the above two majors). In addition to the examination certificate, driving graduates must pass the examination and obtain the following certificates: First, the G certificate, that is, the GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) certificate; The second is the "four small certificates", that is, familiarity and basic safety, proficiency in lifeboats and rescue boats, proficiency in first aid and advanced fire fighting; The third is the "two small certificates", that is, the standard diagram of Thunder and ARPA operation. Marine engineering graduates must also take the "four small certificates" like driving graduates.
