Fujian Buddhist College Women Department

-the cradle of law, body and wisdom

Today's monk education is the lifeline of Buddhism tomorrow. To continue the lifeline of Buddhism and revitalize Buddhism in China, the fundamental way is to cultivate talents who carry forward Buddhism and live Buddhism. Master Chuanchang, executive vice president of Fujian Buddhist Association, deeply realized this when the policy of freedom of religious belief was re-implemented. Therefore, while repairing the temple, we are also committed to running schools. With the strong support of Fujian Provincial Bureau of Religious Affairs, 1982, Chongfu Temple held a training course for women's Buddhism for the first time, which was the embryonic form of establishing a women's institution. With the approval of Fujian Provincial People's Government 65438-0983, Fujian Buddhist Association formally established Fujian Buddhist College. The Buddhist College is divided into two parts: male and female. The man is in Putian Guanghua Temple and the woman is in Fuzhou Chongfu Temple. The establishment of the Women's Department became the earliest Buddhist women's college in China since the chaos was brought out, which trained a large number of outstanding monks and talents and injected vitality into the Buddhist community at that time. The incorruptible Taoist style, good environment, and Buddhist practice have made the Buddhist College famous at home and abroad. Here is a brief introduction:

Chongfu Temple is located at the foot of Elephant Peak in the northern suburb of Fuzhou. It is one of the five jungles in Fuzhou and the ancestral home of Chongfu Temple in Nagasaki, Japan. Surrounded by mountains and gurgling streams, it is fresh and quiet away from the hubbub. Surrounded by dense Gu Song and ancient banyan trees, the temple is green. Temple was built in the Tang Dynasty, and it was continued in the second year of Taiping Xingguo in the Northern Song Dynasty (978). For more than a thousand years, eminent monks have come forth in large numbers. Since the late Ming Dynasty, Zen masters from Yicun, Qing 'an, Gu Yue, Ding and Yuan Ying have flourished here one after another. In the second year of Chongzhen in the Ming Dynasty (1629), the Zen master became a monk from Japan and set up Chongfu Temple in Shengshou Mountain in Nagasaki. From that time to the seventh generation, the abbots were all from Fujian.

1957, Fuzhou Buddhist Association set up a Buddhist sanatorium here, and the back hall was changed to Zhong Ni Dojo, which was in the charge of Master Chuanchang. After several years' efforts, Master led all the monks to repair and expand, and the scale became larger and larger, which made the temple look brand-new and bright. At present, the building area of the temple is 10000 square meters, and the main buildings include the mountain gate, the Heavenly King Hall, the Daxiong Hall, the abbot's room, the Great Compassion Pavilion, the Buddha Hall, the Wuguantang, the monk's room, the kitchen, the warehouse and the Founder Tower.

There are more than 180 people living in the temple. The monks and nuns in the whole temple live in harmony, and * * * live with fellow initiates, which has become a learning destination that monks and nuns in all directions yearn for, and was once known as the "first female jungle in the south of the Yangtze River". It can be said that taking this ancient temple with a long history, simple and quiet Taoist style as the campus, the monks are naturally in a good Dojo atmosphere. Since its establishment, the Buddhist College has a very clear purpose of running a school, that is, to cultivate monks who love their country and teach, pay equal attention to learning and training, have full faith, have high knowledge of Buddhism, can engage in Buddhist teaching and research, and can manage monasteries.

The goal of education is to cultivate talents with correct knowledge and views, who can effectively practice Buddhism and serve the society. The enrollment conditions are: Shamini and Bhikuni with junior high school education or equivalent education; Aged between 18-30, in good health, and must be recommended by local Buddhist associations and competent authorities. Pass the exam, select the best candidates, and then put them into preparatory classes or training classes for teaching according to their grades and educational level. The college offers undergraduate courses (only two undergraduate courses are held, which are applied by the graduates of preparatory courses, and then closed due to problems such as funds and teachers), preparatory courses and training courses for two years. The purpose of the course is to enable students to master certain Buddhist knowledge and cultural knowledge and cultivate their research ability on Buddhist courses through systematic study. Over the years, the college's curriculum has remained basically unchanged, focusing on the wisdom of being cautious and independent in explaining classics, law and theory, implementing the teaching principle from theory to practice, and offering courses on world studies such as Chinese, history and politics. Take the preparatory course as an example. Courses offered include the Goblet of Fire, the Sutra of Infinite Life, Tommy's Cautions, Huayan Sutra, Selected readings of Buddhist Scriptures, Brahma Sutra, Sammi Dharma, Four-Point Dharma, Four Teachings in Tiantai, Teaching Outlook, Theory of Giving Up Everything and Theory of Hundred Laws and Discipline.

Our college has a sound management organization to manage the school. The association is headquartered in the Buddhist Association of fahai temple Province, with a dean in charge of the overall guidance and two vice presidents in charge of coordinating the work of the dean and taking charge of the male and female departments. There are two departments for men and women: the provost, the deputy provost and the director of the office, which are responsible for the specific educational affairs and daily work.

The source of teachers is not only to hire knowledgeable and persistent wizards inside teaching, but also to hire teachers with expertise outside teaching. Fortunately, the outstanding graduates of our department have been enriched into the teaching staff. The first year is difficult, and teachers, teaching materials and reference materials are extremely scarce. There is only one mage who gives lectures. With the help of invited old laymen and foreign Chinese teachers, they struggled for more than a year because of their poor skills, and then gradually improved, forming a relatively stable teaching team. Teaching staff 12, including 9 teachers, and class teachers 1 person. All teachers can set an example, work quietly and make selfless contributions to teaching books and educating good people. 1, protocol and management

It should be said that what kind of talents to train is the primary problem of running religious colleges well. Since the establishment of 1983, Guangming Buddhist College of Chongfu Temple has always attached importance to the construction of school discipline and rules. After years of exploration, by 199 1, a relatively complete management system has been formulated, such as student rules, classrooms, temples, dormitories, hygiene rules, work and rest, asking for leave when receiving visitors, and students on duty. Performance appraisal is divided into three aspects: conduct, study and attendance. Only when the required standards are met can graduation certificates be issued (only graduation certificates will be given to those who fail). At the beginning of each semester, the college arranges an entrance education week for freshmen to study the educational policy and various rules and regulations of the college, so that they can understand the rules of collective life in the jungle and the content and purpose of paying equal attention to learning and learning.

According to the regulations of the College, those who have achieved excellent results in each semester and those who have left Man Qin will be commended on the red list, and those who have achieved the top five results in each academic year (the second semester) and those who have left Man Qin will be rewarded, so as to mobilize students' enthusiasm for learning and encourage them to keep forging ahead and make unremitting efforts for learning. If students are at fault, they will not hinder publicity, but will only persuade them privately; If their thoughts and actions violate group discipline or influence the public, they will be criticized by name or punished accordingly. Those who leave school for more than the specified time will be treated as automatic withdrawal.

At the end of each semester, students are required to conduct self-appraisal according to the rules and regulations stipulated by the college. After being evaluated by the class committee and the Academic Affairs Office, the class teacher will write comments, which will be sent to the students' teachers and stored in the students' files at the same time as the examination results of all subjects in the semester.

2. Student life

Students live according to the schedule arranged by the college, which is both compact and full. Every morning at four o'clock, the monks wake up and wash up immediately with the sound of a board that wakes up the dreamer. When the drums sounded, they had lined up neatly and hurried into the hall with dignity to recite the morning class with the abbot monks. After the lecture, we took a short rest, then lined up for the whole class to eat, put on our clothes and sat by the wax, orderly and silent. After breakfast, I began to clean the environment. At eight o'clock, the bell of class marks the beginning of a day's study. The students absorbed in sucking the nectar of Fayu and enjoying the happiness of Fayu.

A few hours passed quickly, and at noon, they were still queuing in Wuguan Hall. In order to ensure that the students are full of energy, they have a rest for one and a half hours at noon, then have classes and study by themselves at night. With the silent bell, the day's study and life is over. I have a half-day job every week. On Sunday afternoon, I attended a lecture on Nirvana Sutra given by Master Jing for the public. Watch Buddhist videos or news broadcasts on weekend nights. If so, I will smoke and practice little by little and accumulate resources.

3. Extracurricular activities

In addition to attending classes, the college also carries out various lively second-class activities. For example, many scholars have been organized to visit Master Hongyi Memorial Hall and Master Lingta. Visit the memorial hall of national hero Lin Zexu; Participate in the speech contest of "patriotism and love to teach knowledge", the calligraphy exhibition of "love my China", religious evenings and various meetings and activities organized by the Provincial Religious Affairs Bureau. This strengthens patriotism education, enriches students' lives and broadens their knowledge. Since 1984, the Buddhist Association of Fujian Province has held Buddhist ring meetings in Chongfu Temple almost twice a year. During the Buddhist ceremony, the college closed for three to four weeks, and some students took part in it. Those who don't accept the precepts have taken part in the precept-keeping work, such as going to the church and waiting on the waiter, which has benefited the monks a lot.

The college also has a library and reading room, equipped with classics and related learning materials such as the Tripitaka, newspapers and magazines for teachers and students to read and refer to after class. The Academy Wall Newspaper is also a window for monks to exchange ideas with each other.

Step 4 go hand in hand

Cultivation is not only imparting knowledge, but also becoming a monk and a teacher. Moral behavior is more important than study. Discipline is the principle of life. Therefore, becoming a monk in a college must strictly observe the precepts. As the saying goes, "If Pini is born, so is Buddhism". Whether to observe precepts or not is related to the success or failure of individual practice and the rise and fall of Buddhism as a whole. The college has outstanding performance in implementing the teaching principle of "combining learning with application, applying what you have learned". The main reason is closely related to Chongfu Temple. Since its restoration, the temple has resumed its legal procedures and strict Taoist style, which embodies the good demeanor of the jungle tradition. 1992, opened a law class. After five years, a group of legal talents who teach precepts and preach the law have been trained, which not only provides teachers for law courses, but also transports teachers for the subject departments of the college. At the same time, it is also conducive to the development of Bussa's rituals such as observing precepts, enjoying himself, abbot and preaching dharma. In the specific environment of Chongfu Temple, the teachers and students of the college and the resident monks all take precepts as their teachers, and live, sit and lie down, and act like laws.

Monks and nuns hold a traditional ceremony of giving alms and chanting scriptures every half a month (on the 23rd, 29th or 30th of the black month, and on the 8th of the white month,15th), so that their daily activities can be taught by the Buddha, and they can repent as the law. Every year from April 15 to July 15 for three months, we will abide by the Buddha's system and settle down in summer. Over the past few years, the temple has also received visiting monks from various provinces and cities to coexist peacefully. The masses get together and work hard. Realize the "jungle-style and jungle-college-style life management of monks" advocated by Pu Zhao Old Hospital.

Teachers, students and permanent monks in the college are characterized by standardization, dignity and integration of learning and practice, which is generally recognized by the four disciples. 1October 29th,1990 10, President Zhao Puchu of the Chinese Buddhist Association visited Chongfu Temple to give instruction, praise and encouragement to the teachers, students and the people of the whole temple. Dean Zhao said: "This is a model jungle of Bhikuni, with good Taoism and a good Women's Buddhist College. The dormitory is clean and tidy, and the classroom is spacious and bright. Strict system and strong style of study can strengthen students' moral heart. " After the visit, I was very happy. I went to the church with the monks. From 65438-0989, Master Ruwu, Dean of Taiwan Province Yuanguang Buddhist College, and Master Huikong, Dean also led teachers and students to visit. In addition, masters such as Hong Chuan Master, Guang Qia Master, Long Gen Master, American Min Master, Frans Master and his party, Hong Xun Master, Chao Master and He Master from Singapore successively came to the College to give lectures or donate money to help students, and gave high praise to the style of study and Taoism of the College and its resident staff.

The teaching of the college is interested in the supreme teachings of the Buddha, takes the precepts formulated by the Buddha as the guidelines for practice, and takes believing in Buddhism and living in the pure land as the guidance of kung fu, which has become the central content of all monks' study and life. In recent years, under the leadership of many masters in our college, we have organized Sunday meditation sessions to read Mahayana classics, cultivate spiritual purity and encourage wisdom, so that monks can achieve synchronous growth in Buddhist knowledge, belief and practice.

In a word, the Buddhist College enlightens students from the aspects of thought, life, practice and labor, so that they can develop morally, intellectually and physically in an all-round way, become qualified monks, truly assume the Tathagata's family business and continue the Buddhist wisdom. Looking back on the course of running a school, the college has gone through sixteen years. /kloc-in the past 6 years, we have enrolled 2 undergraduates, 8 preparatory classes and 9 training courses, with a total of 540 monks and 487 monks graduating all over the country, which can be said to be fruitful. Some of the monks who graduated are engaged in the education of Buddhist colleges all over the country, some have enriched their work in Fujian Province and local Buddhist associations, and some have continued their studies. The rest returned to their original temples as ministers. Most of them have become the backbone of Buddhism everywhere. Some college graduates went to the United States, Canada, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines and other countries and Hong Kong, and made due contributions to promoting Buddhism, purifying people's hearts and benefiting society.

After more than ten years' efforts, the women's department of Fujian Buddhist College has gained some experience and achievements, but looking forward to the future, there are still some problems to be solved. We firmly believe that as long as Qi Xin works together and shoulders the sense of mission entrusted by the times, the Women's Department of Fujian Buddhist College, the casting place of monks and the place of practicing Buddhism wisdom, will surely grow and develop in the journey of 2 1 century and cultivate more and more Buddhist masters.
