Gear hobbing machines are divided into vertical and horizontal types according to the layout. Large and medium-sized gear hobbing machines are mostly vertical and small gear hobbing machines.

Vertical hobbing machine

The hobbing machines dedicated to processing long shaft gears are all horizontal. Vertical gear hobbing machine can be divided into two types: table movement and column movement. When the vertical gear hobbing machine works, the hob is installed on the spindle of the hob and driven by the main motor to rotate. The tool rest can move vertically along the column guide rail and adjust the angle around the horizontal axis. The workpiece is installed on the workbench, driven by the indexing worm gear pair to rotate, and forms generating motion together with the motion of the hob. When hobbing helical gears, the differential mechanism makes the workpiece do corresponding additional rotation. The workbench (or column) can move along the lathe bed to adapt to different workpiece diameters and make radial feed. The tool rest of some hobbing machines can also move along the hob axis to process worm gears by tangential feed. The large gear hobbing machine is also equipped with a single-tooth indexing mechanism for processing herringbone gears, a finger milling cutter rest and a differential reversing gear.
