Huangling county is a part of Ordos platform and a gully region of the Loess Plateau. The terrain is high in the northwest and low in the southeast, slightly inclined, and divided into three geomorphic units: Liangmao in the west, Chuan Dao Valley and the eastern plateau.

Diantou Town is located at the junction of Sichuan and huangling county, 28km west. It is an industrial small town mainly developing coal resources, the largest administrative town in Yan 'an and the economic center of huangling county. It is a cooperative demonstration zone for township enterprises in the east and west of China, and one of the pilot towns in the province 100 for comprehensive reform of small town construction determined by the provincial party committee and government.
