Can mental illness be reimbursed by medical insurance?

Psychiatric patients can generally be reimbursed for hospitalization, just like general diseases. However, the illness of mental patients must be within the scope of medical insurance, and must be diagnosed in the designated hospital of social security. Generally, the reimbursement rate of medical insurance for urban residents is above 75%, and some areas may reach above 85% due to economic level.

"People's Republic of China (PRC) Mental Health Law" Article 68 The health administrative department of the people's government at or above the county level shall organize medical institutions to provide basic public health services for patients with severe mental disorders free of charge. The medical expenses of patients with mental disorders shall be paid by the basic medical insurance fund in accordance with the provisions of the state on social insurance. Medical insurance agencies shall, in accordance with the relevant provisions of the state, include patients with mental disorders in the scope of protection of basic medical insurance for urban workers, basic medical insurance for urban residents or new rural cooperative medical care. The people's government at the county level shall, in accordance with the relevant provisions of the state, provide financial assistance to patients with severe mental disorders who have financial difficulties in their families to participate in the basic medical insurance. Medical security, finance and other departments should strengthen coordination, simplify procedures, and realize the direct settlement of medical expenses paid by the basic medical insurance fund between medical institutions and medical insurance agencies.
