1. area code-The first three digits of the social security number originally represent the state where the applicant first applied for a social security card. From the northeast to the west, the number gradually increased. In other words, the number on the east coast is the lowest and the number on the west coast is the highest. Starting from 1972, the social security department (SSA) began to allocate numbers and issue social security cards according to the postal code of the mailing address filled in the initial application form. Since the mailing address of the applicant is not necessarily his residential address, his area code does not necessarily represent the state where he lives. Many people have social security numbers since infancy, when the area code represents the state where they were born.

2. Group number-two digits in the middle of social security number, ranging from 0 1 to 99. These two numbers are only for the convenience of management, and the social security number under the same area code is divided into smaller segments. (According to the introduction of the General Administration of Social Security, for management reasons, under the area code allocated to each state, the group codes are enabled in odd order from 0 1 to 09, and then in even order from 10 to 98. When assigning the social security number with the area group code of 98, it will be activated in even order from 02 to 08 and in odd order from 1 1 to 99. )?

3. Serial number-the last four digits of the social security number. Under each group code, the serial number is issued continuously from 000 1 to 9999. Although the social security number is issued regularly, it is still difficult to tell a person's age from his social security number.
