Job hunting starts from freshman year
When I was in college, I came across a book called "Job Hunting, Starting from Freshman Year" in the library, which left a deep impression on me. The book says that what kind of job you find after graduation depends on how you write your resume, and how you write your resume depends on how you spend your four years in college, especially how you use your winter and summer vacations. The battle to find a job does not start at the graduation supply and demand meeting, but starts from the freshman year.
I was very lucky to read this passage as soon as I entered school. In order to realize my ideal of being a journalist with strong moral integrity, I started to prepare early. Since my freshman year, I have used my winter and summer vacations to intern at a provincial media, a prefecture-level media, and a public welfare organization, and I have written special articles for a newspaper for a long time.
My major is not journalism. In the end, the most important factor that made me, a novice with a non-major background, stand out and find a job in a national media was my winter and summer media internship experience. Today, we will take media internship as an example to teach you the techniques and channels for applying for winter and summer internship units. Students in other majors can refer to it. Although the directions are different, the methodology is the same.
I just started my freshman year. In order to increase my journalistic acumen and improve my writing skills, I joined the school’s journalist group when I entered school. This is a student group affiliated with the school’s Party Committee Propaganda Department. In the student union and student associations, his main responsibility is to write articles for the school newspaper.
Shortly after joining the group, I learned that we had internship opportunities. Teachers from the school’s publicity department recommend several outstanding student journalists to intern in social media every winter and summer vacation to improve our writing skills. Opportunities like this are rare, so I asked my seniors about the recommendation conditions as quickly as possible, which were actively submitting articles to the school newspaper, having excellent manuscript quality, attending weekly meetings on time, etc.
Once you know the conditions, all that’s left is to work hard. Small news tofu blocks, interviews with outstanding senior students, campus essays, current reviews... I actively contributed to various sections, and gradually emerged in the team, making teachers and readers memorize my name.
Later, even the dormitory aunt gave me a surprise. One time I forgot to bring my dormitory key, so I went downstairs to borrow the key from the dormitory aunt. I was about to write my name in the registration book, and the aunt told me, "You don't have to write it down. I know you and I often see your name in the newspaper." "At that moment, I had mixed feelings, and I felt that my efforts were finally not in vain.
I got my wish and got the first batch of internship opportunities among more than a hundred people, and I came to a provincial media during the winter vacation. This internship also laid the foundation for my future internship applications and career planning.
There are many such opportunities on college campuses. As far as our school is concerned, every year students from the student union are recommended to intern in government departments. Such experience is very valuable for students who want to pursue a career in the future.
There are also some student clubs that have connections with local companies in the school because they hold activities or solicit sponsorships. They can also use this channel to be recommended by the club leaders.
In addition, if you are in the student group, you will have a lot of contact with the instructors. University teachers have a wide circle of friends and a lot of resources. If you want to do an internship, you can also ask teachers with whom you have good connections to help contact you.
After this first internship experience, I will be familiar with it in the future.
On the one hand, I continued to write articles on the school newspaper platform, so that my name could appear in as many newspapers as possible, and cut out all the articles from the newspapers, together with the articles published during the internship period, A book of newspaper clippings was made for the examiner to read during the interview.
During this period, I interviewed a very unique junior student. During the winter vacation, he carried a camera and supplies to Tibet to carry out charity activities. The response to the activities was very good. The article published after the interview unexpectedly won the province's Good Journalism Award. It was later forwarded to the national selection committee by the provincial department and won another national award, which greatly improved my resume.
On the other hand, I started to pay attention to various websites and look for internship opportunities myself.
Since my first internship was in the school, accommodation and meals were inconvenient, so this time I mainly paid attention to the media units in my hometown. Hard work pays off. As summer vacation approaches, I see a mainstream media in my hometown recruiting interns, and the position is a trainee reporter. So I made a resume, summarizing the articles I had published, the awards I had received, and my last internship experience, and promptly delivered it to the designated mailbox, and I started my second internship as expected.
For students from other majors who want to apply for vacation internships, they can pay more attention to the websites of relevant companies and pay attention to their recruitment information. Even if there is no relevant information, they can also call the office to recommend themselves. Many companies have some phased tasks that are suitable for recruiting temporary staff.
Students who want to intern in their hometowns can even ask for recommendations from acquaintances. Generally, internship units do not pay wages, or the wage base is very low. Another cheap labor force is what they expect.
The third internship is the one I am most proud of. It is different from the previous two internships. Firstly, it is not during the winter and summer vacations, and secondly, I do not need to work. This time, I became a special feature writer for a certain media.
Students who often read newspapers should be familiar with it. In order to enrich the content of newspapers, many print media will create supplements. Some are literary in nature, some publish photography works, and some are targeted at certain large-scale events.
The media I contribute to has launched a special issue called "The Most Women in Island City" to introduce some outstanding local women. However, because the newspaper reporters have regular news reporting tasks, there is not enough manpower. , so I hired a part-time job.
However, this recruitment was not conducted publicly, but was introduced through acquaintances. I have never been in contact with this media, but my good friend in the school reporter circle has interned here. Because he performed well during the internship, he maintained good contact with the newspaper after the internship. When the newspaper was in urgent need of manpower for a special issue, it first contacted her and asked her to introduce another reliable writer.
So my classmate introduced me, and we happily accepted the title of "Special Issue Author". We took this opportunity to interview female entrepreneurs, well-known designers, and a very popular designer. Screenwriters, etc. have greatly enriched our network and knowledge. And I received a royalties of 180 yuan for each manuscript. When I got my newspaper remittance slip at the post office, the word royalties was clearly written on it. This joyful feeling was incomparable.
It is very important to actively integrate into the professional circle. Not only can you recommend each other when there are internship opportunities, but you can also share fresh information immediately in daily life, stay together as a team, and make progress together.
In addition to internships in media units, I also worked as an editor for an internal magazine and newspaper of a public welfare organization. I also fought for the opportunity myself, because a graduated alumnus worked in this organization. During the interview, I became very curious about public welfare, so I took the initiative to take the editing job of magazines and newspapers.
Multiple internship experiences have not only allowed me to integrate into the workplace in advance, exercised my abilities in all aspects, but also beautified my resume. Compared with those classmates who had no internship experience during school, my resume helped me win the first round of job hunting after graduation, and I got my wish to enter a national media.
I hope that students who are still on campus can make full use of time and resources, take the initiative, and win at the starting line of job hunting.
