In the first job, growth is more important than income.

A sudden epidemic in COVID-19, after several months, gradually spread from China to the whole world, making 2020 the most difficult year for fresh graduates to find jobs. According to the public data of the Ministry of Education, in 2020, the number of college graduates increased by 400,000 compared with last year, reaching 8.74 million. BOSS directly hired and released the "2020 Freshmen Spring Recruitment Job Search Trend Report". According to the data, as of March 3, 2020, the number of fresh graduates who actively applied for jobs in the spring recruitment season (since February 3) increased by 56% compared with last year, but the recruitment demand of enterprises for fresh graduates decreased by 22% year-on-year.

In such a severe environment, how should fresh graduates choose their first job in life?

Many people have different views on their first job. Some people think that the first job is everything, "one careless move will lose the game" and "one wrong step will lose the game"; Some people think that the first job is not so important, even if you choose the wrong one, you can start over.

In my opinion, the first job is very important. It may not play a decisive role, but it is inextricably linked with our future direction.

To give a few examples, Ma's first job after graduating from university was as an engineer in a company called Runxun (related to Tencent's name). It is said that the original idea of QQ was first put forward in this company. Because the idea was rejected, he simply rolled up his sleeves and started Tencent Empire himself.

Liu's first job was as a computer manager (network administrator), business manager and logistics supervisor in a Japanese company. After two years, he came to Zhongguancun with the savings of 1.2 million, rented a small counter, and sold burners and CDs, which was the predecessor of JD. COM mall ".

Ma Yun's first job after graduating from university was to be an English teacher at Hangzhou Institute of Electronic Technology. It seems that it has nothing to do with his founding Alibaba, but he wants to be a teacher when he thinks that he founded Ma Yun Public Welfare Foundation and led the rural teacher program after retiring from Alibaba. This experience has a deep influence on him.

Judging from the experience of the bosses, the impact of our first job after graduation can be divided into several types:

For students with clear future plans and strong professionalism in universities, their career development is usually divided into two lines-management line and expert line. The former takes the way of Commissioner, supervisor and manager, while the latter takes the way of junior engineer, intermediate engineer and senior engineer. No matter which way you take, the accumulation of experience is very important.

The first job determines our vision, way of thinking and circle of contacts to a certain extent. Fan Jiang, the vice president of Tmall, was particularly popular in Zhang Dayi because of his affair some time ago. He got his first job at Google China. Later, Google China had no choice but to retreat strategically in the confrontation with Baidu, but Li Kaifu, the old leader of Google China, attached great importance to him. After coming out of Google China, with the support of Kai-Fu Lee, Fan Jiang founded Youmeng Technology, which provides big data services, and also received angel investment from Kai-Fu Lee.

Few people mention this, but I think it is very important. For ordinary individuals who are not rich second generation, the original capital accumulation must be obtained from work. Many people buy houses, cars and even start businesses by accumulating funds through work. Those who joined Huawei in the early days bought a house in Shenzhen early. Later, housing prices in Shenzhen soared, and some people realized the freedom of wealth. In fact, this is the logic.

Among elite groups, there is a conventional view that young people should pay more attention to their growth than their salary in their first job. A typical example is the author of Insight, Dr. Wu Jun, who graduated from Tsinghua University and Johns Hopkins University. He was a senior researcher at Google and a former vice president of Tencent. In the column he got, he specially opened a column to guide college graduates not to pay too much attention to treatment in their first job choice.

To understand this problem, we must first introduce the well-known 28 rules, that is, 20% of the people in the world own 80% of social wealth, 20% of the companies in the industry earn 80% of the money in the market, and we spend 80% of our time on 20% of the apps.

The "28" rule also exists in the workplace. In the company, 20% people contributed 80% of the value, and 20% people took 80% of the remuneration.

From the perspective of recruitment, 20% of core positions are willing to provide treatment far higher than the market price in order to seize world-class talents. Before launching the top talent recruitment plan, Huawei introduced 20-30 talented teenagers from all over the world, and this year's doctoral graduation salary reached 2 million.

What about the remaining 80% jobs? Even large companies may not be able to give higher treatment than the market price, and even reduce the salary of these people when the economy is tight or the shortage of talents is not urgent.

Based on this logic, for a student who is not a top talent but graduated from a prestigious school, the best way is to lower some salary expectations in exchange for better growth space, because excellent enterprises usually attach importance to cultivating people.

Wu Jun gave an example in Insight. After graduating from college, people who went to Google or Microsoft got a great training in engineering ability after three years, and then moved to BAT in China, which can achieve a very high salary increase. On the contrary, it is not easy.

However, not every college graduate can go to top companies like Google and Microsoft. Even BAT, considered by Wu Jun as a second-rate company, lags far behind ordinary graduates.

You know, class differentiation doesn't start when you choose your first job. In fact, it started as early as the college entrance examination, or even earlier. According to the analysis of Tsinghua Peking University's enrollment in previous years, Beijing has the highest enrollment ratio, which can reach 1%, while other provinces and cities only have 0.03%. It can be seen that the proportion of elite groups in the whole society is quite low. If we only look at this problem from the perspective of elites, we obviously can't see the whole picture of this problem.

For an ordinary undergraduate, we should also consider our own abilities, and try to choose a job with a large platform, promising development prospects, enhancing our own value and room for growth within our abilities.

For students who really can't get into a good company and can only choose worse, it's really helpless to choose one that is not so bad or has higher income.

Write it at the back

Many people think that since we chose our first job, our life has been to hold our heads high and rise to the top. In fact, most people's career development is nonlinear and dynamically adjusted. Nonlinear means that your career development is not continuous progress, but two steps forward, one step back, three steps forward and two steps back. After all, the external environment and ourselves are constantly changing. Nowadays, very popular occupations, such as product manager and operation, did not exist before the rise of the Internet 20 years ago. However, the occupations that were popular in our parents' era, such as drivers and typists, no longer exist. Even if we are on the road of Ran Ran's rise, maybe 30 years in the East and 30 years in the West, we will inadvertently come to the end of this industry.

The first job is very important to us. It can help us accumulate experience, contacts and wealth, and to a certain extent, it will also determine our pattern, vision, way of thinking and circle of contacts. When choosing the first job, salary is also very important, but the latter is more important than the development prospect and growth space. At the same time, we need to bear in mind that our career development is nonlinear and dynamic, which does not mean that you can choose a job at will, but that you need to consider the long-term when facing each job. After all, life is long and every step is important.
