Suzhou baibu street former residence of Su.

1999, 102-year-old talented woman, Mr. Su, the "evergreen tree" in the literary world, is driving a crane westward in Taiwan Province Province. Su, formerly known as Su Mei, first name, pen name. During the Republic of China, he was famous in the literary world, and the debate with Lu Xun caused dissatisfaction among many Lu Xun lovers. Before liberation, Sue went to Taiwan Province to teach. After liberation, the influence of the Soviet Union shifted to the literary circles in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Su Yisheng has taught in Hujiang University, Anhui University, Wuhan University, Taiwan Province Normal University and Taiwan Province national cheng kung university. Later, there were dozens of volumes of complete works. Mr. Su has also taught many middle schools. In Suzhou, he taught in two girls' middle schools, Zhenhua and Jinghai. ? Dong Qiao, a famous scholar, is his favorite disciple.

Su has created more than 40 works in his life, and enjoys a good reputation in the literary circles on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. It never occurred to her that 13 years after her death, a description of Suzhou folk houses in her autobiography left an unsolved mystery for future generations. This mysterious dispute has never been solved, because it mainly comes down to Sue and two parties with completely different views. Since then, friends who have contacted Su Zhang have divided into two different views: No.8 Baibu Street and No.2/kloc-0.

Sue's former residence in Baibu Street is her only private residence. The old man wrote to Taiwan Province No.10 Middle School (Zhenhua Girls' Middle School) asking about the old house on Baibu Street. Courtyard 8- 12 of Baibu Street Block was once occupied by many famous people. Su's building in Baibu Street was designed on 1927 and completed on 1928.

According to Su's autobiography, Su came to Suzhou three times. The author's statistics are as follows:

The first time was in the spring of the 15th year of the Republic of China (1926). On the recommendation of Mr. Chen Zhongfan, a lecturer at Soochow University, and at the invitation of President W.B.Nance of Soochow University, I came to Jinghai Girls' Middle School and Zhenhua Girls' Middle School jointly organized by Soochow University and Methodist Church to teach part-time. At that time, Su stayed in the staff dormitory of Jinghai Women's College in Tianci Zhuang Campus. In the second half of that year, Soochow University recruited professors. Because of the background of MIT, teachers are valued by the school and negotiate with Mr. Zhang to teach. Teacher Zhang readily promised to take a long vacation from the shipyard to teach at Soochow University. Mr. Zhang returned to Shanghai after teaching at Soochow University for only one year, and Su also left Suzhou soon. On the recommendation of her sixth uncle, she went to Hujiang University to teach Chinese, and then moved to Hujiang University. Later, Su, with a distinct personality, hated the "flashy" atmosphere in Hujiang and resigned after teaching in Hujiang for only one year. In the 20th year of the Republic of China (193 1), her good friend Yuan (Lanzi) strongly recommended Wang Shijie, then president of Wuhan University, and Mr. Su went to teach at Wuhan University.

The second time my husband Zhang Baoling and I returned to Suzhou from Hujiang University, the time was 1928. Building Baibu Street 12 was designed in 1927 and completed in 1928. 1928- 1930 He lived here when he went to the Soviet Union for the second time. During this period, the new residence of Baibu Street designed by Sue's ex-husband was completed.

For the third time, Mr. Su returned to Suzhou after teaching in Anhui University and Wuhan University for many years. In Su's autobiography, he described this small building as a boat-shaped structure. 12 Building has heating in the rooms, chimneys on the roof, and all rooms are long and narrow. There are balconies on the ground floor and the east and west floors. However, we can't see such a pattern in No.8 Hospital. Now, under the wise decision of Suzhou University, the dilapidated old residential area of Baibu Street, as a building relic of the Republic of China and a part of Soochow University, has been declared not to be demolished and planned to be protected. Su Da's response to the media at that time was encouraging, if this decision could be implemented. Soon, Baibu Street may form an interactive effect with the nearby Fengmen Street historical block, adding new tourist highlights to the ancient city of Suzhou.

Anyway, Su, a talented woman of the Republic of China, really had an indissoluble bond with Suzhou. When she is happy, people will still ask Sue whether she lives at No.8 Baibu Street or 12 Courtyard. The answer is different.

Interested friends come down, and we enter the research section.

There are basically two views,

One is "",that is, the dictation about Mr. Wang that has been found now and Mr. Zhang provided by the Soviet University. It was sold to "Qi" of Soochow University as evidence to prove that Su Zhai was No.8 Hospital. Bai, a former professor and historian at Soochow University, agrees. At that time, Zhang and I were both teaching at Soochow University, so they met. Mr. Zhang thinks that No.8 is the house that Mr. Zhang sold in that year, that is to say, 1927 Su stayed in the new house when she returned to the Soviet Union from Shanghai Hujiang University. The evidence seems to point to No.8 courtyard of Baibu Street, which is Sue's house.

However, another book, Su Shuo, has a completely different view.

Different from the physical evidence of the deed, Su said that it was mainly based on the words "Fengmen No.12" mentioned in Su's autobiography. In addition, Mr. Su's student and Shanghai translator also explicitly mentioned "Fengmen Baibu Street 12" in the book. The eighth chapter of Su's Autobiography published by Jiangsu Literature and Art Publishing House, Teaching in Suzhou and Returning to Shanghai, wrote, "My husband resigned from Dongda University and returned to Shanghai, still holding the post of Jiangnan Shipyard ... He has lived in Tianci Village, Suzhou for one year. He likes this town and wants to settle down there and become a permanent home. His father, Mr. Yu San, has divided the property among his three sons and has money in his hand. Although he was ill, he still asked his colleagues at Dongda University to find land for him. After Dongda University, it was found to be the winery of Fenmen 12. Because the factory is moving, I am willing to sell the house and address together. After recovering from illness, my husband personally went to Suzhou for an inspection. When he was satisfied, he bought it and began to build a new house. I advised him to find an architect to draw a house, but he wouldn't listen and wanted to draw it himself. Colleagues introduced a contractor, and a few months later, the new house was completed. " Su explained in detail the ins and outs of the new villa in Baibu Street, and twice mentioned that the new house was "No.12 Fenmen". There seems to be a certain possibility that it is Baibu Street 12. After all, it is from Sue's autobiography, and the evidence should not be underestimated. "Su Shuo" has corresponding circumstantial evidence, which is described in the second chapter of Su's disciple, Mr. Shanghai translator's memoir "Past is like smoke": "The professor only taught at Soochow University for one year, and returned to Shanghai in the summer vacation of 1927, and still worked at Jiangnan Shipyard. After returning to Shanghai, Mr. Su taught at Hujiang University and lived in the dormitory. But he only taught for one year, and wrote an autobiographical novel "Spine Heart", which was serialized for the first time in the semi-monthly magazine of Beixin. After several chapters are published, they will be printed and published by Beixin Bookstore. Professor Zhang Baoling fell ill less than a month after he returned to Shanghai. During his illness, he especially missed the year he spent in Tianci Village. He thought Suzhou was really a quiet place and wanted to settle down here, so he asked a colleague of Soochow University to buy him a piece of land in Suzhou. As a result, I found a winery near the back door of Soochow University, at No.100 Step Street 12, Fengmen, and was willing to sell the house and foundation together. For this reason, Professor Zhang personally visited Suzhou once, and felt satisfied, so he bought the foundation together with the house, designed and painted the pattern himself, and found a contractor to build it. A few months later, the new house was completed. Professor Zhang is a student majoring in shipbuilding. He designed his new house like a ship, narrow and long, with a strange shape. More than 60 years have passed, I wonder if this boat-shaped building still exists? From the fall semester of 1928, the professor came to teach at Soochow University in Suzhou, and Mr. Su also returned to teach at Soochow University and taught part-time at Zhenhua Girls' Middle School. They live in a long and narrow boat-shaped new house. This began the second stage of Mr. Su's life in Suzhou. ".The Past Like Smoke 1999 published by Shanghai Ancient Books Publishing House. Mr. Zhu wrote this article earlier than 1999, and it has been more than 60 years since Su's new house in Baibu Street was completed 1927. Mr. Zhu mentioned the words "Fengmen Baibu Street 12" in the above article, and also explained that its predecessor was a winery. Now passing by Wangmenqiaotou 12 courtyard at the northern end of Baibu Street, you can still see the words "Feng Jiuchang" written on the brick of the residual wall of the courtyard. Perhaps it makes sense that the winery is called "Fengjiuchang". According to another survey, Su's business card when she was teaching at Soochow University also clearly showed the words "Baibu Street 12". It can be seen that it is inconsistent with what Sue left to future generations.

Suzhou Daily once published the article "No.8 Baibu Street, the former residence of the famous missionary Jiang Changchuan". In this article, Qin, a retired teacher from No.10 Middle School and an expert on Soviet studies, mentioned a detail in his reminiscence article: "Su's residence in Baibu Street, Suzhou is a two-story building with a river in the north, and the river can be seen from the first and second floors. No.8 Baibu Street has only one floor, which is obviously inconsistent with the memories of the parties. " Building 8 is separated by the bungalow on the 10 floor, and there can't be a river in the north. It can be seen that Mr. Qin is also a supporter of Su Shuo.

The main evidence is summarized as follows:

1. In her memoir (Jiangsu Literature and Art Publishing House, the words referring to the house are in chapter 8 of her autobiography "Teaching in Su and Returning to Shanghai"), Ms. Su mentioned twice that the newly-built house is "Fenmen 12", which may be Baibu Street 12. But the isolated evidence doesn't hold, so I provide other circumstantial evidence for reference.

2. The memoir of Mr. Su Disciple, Past as Smoke (published by Shanghai Ancient Books Publishing House 1999- 10), chapter 2, section 4, "Su is in Suzhou", and there is indeed "Fengmen Baibu Street 12" in the textual research. It is consistent with the text of "Fengmen No.12" in Su Autobiography.

Excerpts are as follows:

"Professor Zhang Baoling only taught at Soochow University for one year. 1927 returned to Shanghai in the summer vacation and still worked at Jiangnan Shipyard.

-Wen Zhu's memoir "The Past Is Like Smoke" (published by Shanghai Ancient Books Publishing House in June 1999- 10) contains the second chapter "Homesickness" and the fourth section "Sue in Suzhou".

Collateral evidence:

In Su's autobiography, this small building is described as the structure of a ship. 12 Building has heating in the rooms, chimneys on the roof, and all rooms are long and narrow. There are balconies on the first floor and the east and west floors. The house really looks like a ship, so Su Yu's description fits well, but No.8 is not in this pattern.

4. Teacher Qin, a retired teacher of Su No.10 Middle School, mentioned a detail in "Memories of Su's Students and Famous Translators": "Su's home in Baibu Street, Suzhou is a two-story building with a river in the north. You can see the river from the first floor and the second floor. No.8 Baibu Street has only one floor, which is obviously inconsistent with the memories of the parties. " Building 8 is separated by the bungalow on the 10 floor, and there can't be a river in the north. Qin's words can be found in the article "No.8 Baibu Street, the former residence of famous church figure Jiang Changchuan" published in Suzhou Daily last year.

5. Sue clearly printed the address "Baibu Street 12" on her business card as a teacher of Soochow University. It is consistent with what Zhu Wen said.

Zhang said:

According to verification, the title deed supporting this statement has the words "No.8 Baibu Street", which was never sold to Soochow University by Zhang Baoling in that year. The original quotation is as follows:

"19531On October 24th, Zhang Baoling sold four acres of four, four, four, six, eight western-style bungalows and sixteen Chinese bungalows in the name of Jiangsu Normal University, totaling RMB1045 million." .

-The above is the original property ownership certificate of the house 1953 sold by Mr. Zhang Baoling to Jiangsu Normal University.

The author provides a controversial point of view:

1. The author went to No.8 Baibu Street to investigate and asked the owner that there were many houses in No.8 Courtyard, which was described as a small building on the second floor of Linjiang according to Su's autobiography. Since he moved in, there has never been a two-story building in the riverside area behind No.8 Changchuan House in Neijiang, and the bungalows around No.8 Courtyard were built later than Jiangzhai. There used to be some simple kitchens by the river. In addition, there is a floor next to Jiangzhai, which is not a building of the Republic of China after examination, nor does it have the appearance characteristics of the "boat-shaped building" described in Su's autobiography.

2. Although the evidence that Mr. Zhang sold this house to Suda University has land proof, it may be inclined to Mr. Zhang in legal effect. However, a piece of paper cannot completely replace historical textual research, at least "isolated evidence does not stand." When researching, do you only pick out the evidence that is beneficial to you, without considering the contradiction between other evidence and these evidence? Similarly, in the textual research of "Zhang Shuo" and "Su Shuo", the historical value of Su's autobiography and Mr. Su's memoirs must not be ignored only by the words signed on the land certificate.

Due to the lack of historical data, the author imagined a possibility: since there is no house facing the river in No.8 Hospital at present, it did not exist at least in the late 1950s. Then, is it possible that the No.8 Hospital was originally connected with the 12 Hospital (the on-the-spot investigation is really close), and the 12 Hospital was originally closed (around the 1920s and 1930s), so Mr. Su thought it was the 12 Hospital. When Mr. Zhu visited Mr. Su, he probably entered Building 12 from No.8 Courtyard, so the words "Fengmen Baibu Street 12" appeared in Mr. Zhu's memoirs. The opposite of 12 was originally Zhouzhai 10, which was demolished as a whole due to the widening of Baibu Street.

4. Looking at the basis of the two theories, the author tends to "Su Shuo", saying that there is no circumstantial evidence except a piece of paper. Will Mr. Zhang make mistakes? It's too late. It was sold out in the 1950s. Is it the same house? Su's "12" does not mean "No.8", nor is it the teacher's residence in a godsend village in Su Da. According to the autobiography, the time doesn't match.

5. The house mentioned in the property certificate delivered by Mr. Zhang to Jiangsu Normal University should be Jiangchangchuan house, and the pattern is basically the same. However, the house that Mr. Zhang built in the 1920s, where Su once lived, should not be a real estate license, so it is not a villa number. 12 or 1953, the house is gone. The author once asked the residents who have lived in No.8 Courtyard and 12 Courtyard since the late 1940s, and they all said that the boat-shaped building I remember is only the riverside location of No.2 Courtyard/KLOC-0, and the Liu Zhaitou (two-story building, Soochow University dormitory) across the river has been completely demolished. If all the eight western-style bungalows in No.8 Courtyard are by the river, then 1953 will not be a foreign-style building in the 1920s when it is delivered. Whether there was a foreign-style building in No.8 Hospital in 1920s, which was earlier than 1953, has not been seen so far. Perhaps, this is also a hypothesis.

6. According to the property certificate, there are eight sets of western-style bungalows, which may be eight sets on one floor or four sets on two floors. This is not clearly marked. And it is very likely that this deed has nothing to do with Sue. There is no basis for whether the house numbers (No.8 and 12) have changed.

Things to be dealt with later (when telling a story)

When Su He talked about the residential address of Baibu Street, why there was such a deviation is unknown. Now that Mr. Wang has passed away, Mr. Zhang and Mr. Wang are not alive, so it is impossible to interview witnesses. At least, people in Suzhou now know that there once lived a talented woman named Su in Baibu Street. Su is a great writer who enjoys a good reputation in the literary circles on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. Now this house has been uncovered for many years, and Su Dafang has never repaired it, as if it were letting it collapse. I look forward to the early restoration of this Republic of China building. As a lover of Su's works, I think writing this article is the best explanation for Mr. Su. Su's only private house on the mainland is also a good witness to cross-strait cultural exchanges.
