In February of the following year, Tan Sitong, Tang and others initiated the establishment of the "Southern Society" in Changsha, with the aim of deepening knowledge, restoring ability and expanding public welfare, and launched a fierce struggle with Hunan conservatives. Chen often attends lectures held by the Southern Institute and agrees with the reformists' ideas of political reform.
