Pengshui Miao and Tujia Autonomous County (Pengshui County for short) is located in the southeast of Chongqing City, in the Wuling Mountains and on the lower reaches of the Wujiang River. ?
Pengshui County is connected to Shizhu County to the north, Lichuan City of Hubei Province to the northeast, Qianjiang District to the east, Youyang County to the southeast, Yanhe County and Wuchuan County of Guizhou Province to the south, and Guizhou Province to the southwest. Daozhen County is connected to Wulong County to the west and Fengdu County to the northwest. In 593, the 13th year of Emperor Kaihuang's reign in the Sui Dynasty, Pengshui County was placed under the jurisdiction of Qian'an County. In the 10th year of Daye (614), it was divided into Xian'an County of Pengshui. In 619, the second year of Tang Wude's reign, it was changed to Xinning County.
The Five Dynasties were under the jurisdiction of Qianzhou and Wutaijun.
In 1063, the eighth year of Jiahu's reign in the Song Dynasty, the four counties of Ru, Xinning, Yangshui and Hongdu were transferred to Pengshui and placed under the jurisdiction of Qianzhou. In 1228, the first year of Shaoding, it belonged to Shaoqing Mansion. In 1272, the eighth year of Xianchun's reign, the administrative office was moved to the foothills of Hutou Mountain on the west bank of Wujiang River.

In 1935, the 24th year of the Republic of China, it was reorganized into the Eighth Administrative Supervision District of Sichuan Province.
After the founding of the People's Republic of China in January 1950, it belonged to the Fuling Prefecture of the East Sichuan Administration. In September 1952, it belonged to Fuling District of Sichuan Province. In June 1968, it belonged to the Fuling area of ??Sichuan Province. On November 14, 1983, with the approval of the State Council, Pengshui Miao and Tujia Autonomous County was restructured and established on November 10, 1984. Since 1987, it has been part of the Qianjiang region. In June 1997, it became a municipality directly under the Central Government of Chongqing.
