The city governs 7 counties (cities, districts) including Beiliu City, Rongxian County and Luchuan County and Yudong New District. By the end of 2020, the total population will reach 7.4 million and the permanent population will be 5.4 million. It is the second most populous city in Guangxi and a famous hometown of overseas Chinese in China.

Yulin is located in the southeast of Guangxi, adjacent to Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, in front of Beibu Gulf, with its back to the southwest and facing Southeast Asia, at the junction of South China Economic Circle and Southwest Economic Circle.
