It is the largest university in northwest China. The school’s predecessor was the National Northwest Agriculture and Forestry College founded in 1934 and later related science and education units established in Yangling. In September 1999, with the approval of the State Council, the original Northwest Agricultural University, Northwest Forestry College, Soil and Water Conservation Institute of the Ministry of Water Resources of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Northwest Water Conservancy Research Institute of the Ministry of Water Resources, Shaanxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Shaanxi Academy of Forestry Sciences, and Shaanxi Province were established in Yangling. Seven provincial scientific and educational institutions including the Northwest Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, were merged to form Northwest Agriculture and Forestry University.
