Chaoshan area is located in the southeast coast of Guangdong Province, belonging to Chaoshan cultural area and Chaoshan dialect area. It is the ancestral home and concentrated place of Chaoshan people, the birthplace and prosperity of Chaoshan culture, and the popular and popular area of Chaoshan dialect, including Shantou (special economic zone), Chaozhou, Jieyang and Shanwei.

Chaoshan area, called Chaozhou in ancient times, was called Chaoshan after the founding of New China, and was originally called Shantou now.

The name "Chaozhou" is named after the ancient Chaozhou prefecture, which means "within the Chaozhou continent, the tides reciprocate". In the 11th year of Emperor Kai of Sui Dynasty (59 1), the original Yi 'an County was renamed Chaozhou, and the names of the administrative districts used as Chaoshan were Sui, Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing. Up to now, China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan compatriots and overseas Chinese still call Chaoshan Chaozhou.

The name "Chaoshan" originated in modern China. In the eighth year of Xianfeng in Qing Dynasty (1858), the Qing court signed the Sino-British Treaty of Tianjin under the threat of artillery fire from British colonialists. Chaozhou is listed as one of the trading ports. After many negotiations, Shantou officially opened for trade in the 11th year of Xianfeng (18 1), which is called "Shantou".

In the 9th year of Guangxu reign in Qing Dynasty (1883), it appeared in the customs archives of the DPRK and was used in Chinese and foreign politics, diplomacy and trade.

Since modern times, Shantou has gradually evolved into the political, economic and cultural center of eastern Guangdong, forming Chaoshan, hence the name "Chaoshan area".
