What does Latin America mean?

Latin America is the general name of the southern United States, including Mexico, Central America, the West Indies and South America. Why do you associate this large area of the United States with the word Latin? It turns out that since the end of 15, most countries in this region have successively become colonies of Spain and Portugal, and a large number of immigrants have poured in. Hence the name.
