How many teams in NBA history?
1946: "BAA-BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA" was established. At that time, there were eleven teams divided into two groups: east and west.
The eleven teams are:

1962: The Philadelphia Warriors moved to San Francisco and were renamed San Francisco WARRIORS; the Chicago Packers were renamed Chicago ZEPHYRS.
1963: The Chicago Zephyrs moved to Baltimore and were renamed the Baltimore BULLETS; the Jazz Nationals moved to Philadelphia and were renamed the Philadelphia 76ERS.
1966: The Chicago Bulls joined the league, and the number of teams rose to ten.
1967: San Diego ROCKETS and Seattle SuperSonics join the league, increasing the number of teams to twelve. The Los Angeles Lakers move to Inglewood, but the team name remains unchanged.
1968: Milwaukee Bucks and Phoenix Suns join the league, bringing the maximum number of participating teams to fourteen in history. The St. Louis Hawks moved to Atlanta and changed their name to the Atlanta HAWKS.
1970: Buffalo BRAVES, Cleveland Cavaliers and Portland Trail Blazers joined the league, and the number of participating teams rose to seventeen. It is divided into East and West divisions. The East division is also divided into the Central Division and the Atlantic Division; the West division is divided into the Midwest Division and the Pacific Division.
1971: The San Diego Rockets moved to Houston and were renamed the Houston ROCKETS; the San Francisco Warriors moved to Oakland and were renamed the current Golden State Warriors.
1972: The Cincinnati Royals moved to Kansas and Omaha and were renamed the Kansas City-Omaha KINGS.
1973: The Baltimore Bullets moved to Landover (Landover, Maryland, USA) and changed their name to Capital BULLETS.
1974: The New Orleans Jazz joined the league New Orlando JAZZ, and the number of participating teams increased to eighteen. The Cleveland Cavaliers move to Richfield, but the team name remains unchanged. The Capital Bullets also changed their name to the Washington BULLETS.
1975: The Kansas-Omaha Kings settled in Kansas City and changed their name to Kasas City KINGS.
1976: Four teams from the ABA (American Basketball Association) merged into the NBA, and the number of NBA participating teams increased to 22. The four teams are: Denver NUGGETS, Indiana PACERS, New York NETS, and San Antonio PUURS.
1977: The New York Nets moved to Piscataway (located in New Jersey) and changed their name to New Jersey NETS.
1978: The Buffalo Warriors moved to San Diego and changed their name to the San Diego Clippers; the Detroit Pistons moved to Pontiac, and the team name remained unchanged.
1979: The New Orleans Jazz moved to Salt Lake City and changed their name to Utah JAZZ.
1980: The Dallas Mavericks join the NBA, and the number of participating teams becomes twenty-three.
1981: The New Jersey Nets moved to E. Rutherford, and the team name remained unchanged.
1984: The San Diego Clippers moved to Los Angeles and changed their name to the Los Angeles CLIPPERS.
1985: The Kansas City Kings moved to Sacramento and were renamed the Sacramento Kings.
1988: Charlotte HORNETS and Miami HEAT joined, and the NBA expanded again to 25 teams. The Detroit Pistons move to Aubuen Hills, the team name remains unchanged.
1989: Minnesota TIMBERWOLVES and Orlando MAGIC joined, and the number of teams rose again to twenty-seven.
1994: The Cleveland Cavaliers moved back to Cleveland again.
1995: Two Canadian teams, Toronto RAPTORS and Vancouver Grizzlies, joined, bringing the number of teams to twenty-nine.
1997: The Washington Bullets changed their name to the Washington Wizards WIZARDS.
1999: The Los Angeles Lakers return to Los Angeles again.
2001: The Vancouver Grizzlies moved to Memphis and changed their name to Memphis GRIZZLIES.
