Located on the eastern coast of China, downstream of the Yangtze River and Huaihe River, it borders the Yellow Sea in the east, Anhui in the west, Shandong in the north and Zhejiang and Shanghai in the south. It is the birthplace of China ancient Wuyue culture and Yangtze River culture. As early as the prosperous Tang Dynasty in China in the 7th century A.D., Jiangsu continuously transported exquisite silk and silk for the long Silk Road. Nanjing, where the provincial capital is located, is known as the "ancient capital of the Six Dynasties", creating the Yangtze River and other places that promoted the historical process of China.
All branches of Minnan dialect originated from the phonology of Quanzhou and Zhangzhou, but there are unequal differences and changes according to the time of differentiation, the barrier of regions, the evolution of Zhang Quan phonology and other factors. Basically, according to different regions, it can be roughly divided into the following sub-dialects:
Xiamen dialect, Quanzhou dialect, Zhangzhou dialect, Taiwan dialect, Hailufeng dialect, southern Zhejiang dialect, Fujian dialect, Chaoshan dialect, Chaozhou dialect, Leizhou dialect, Hainan dialect and Hainan dialect in Southeast Asia.
In the language system, Minnan dialect is regarded as a Chinese dialect by most linguists in China.
However, most western scholars disagree with this statement. The reason for this is the following:
First, whether different Chinese languages in China are different "languages" or "dialects" has always been controversial in academic circles. Because people who use different Chinese are basically unable to communicate orally, most western scholars believe that these different Chinese are basically the relationship between languages rather than dialects (see chao1976; ; DeFrancis 1984, see dialect).
Second, if Minnan is taken as the main axis of discussion, many scholars have pointed out that Minnan itself is very different from other Chinese (see Dong Zhongshu 2001; Lin Xiuche 1994). Taking Wang Yude's research (1960) as an example, he found that the proportion of "homology" between Xiamen dialect and Beijing dialect in Fujian dialect is 48.9%, which is lower than that of English and German (58.5%). That is to say, if "cognate words" are used as an index to compare language similarity, the difference between Minnan dialect and Beijing dialect is greater than that between English and German.
Based on the above research, some scholars who study Minnan language recently put forward different views on the positioning of Minnan language. They tried to associate the structure and basic vocabulary of Minnan with Austronesian and Dong-Tai languages, and demonstrated the strong influence of other non-Chinese languages on Minnan (see Chin-an Li 2000;; ; Dong Zhongsi1996; Sakai Tōru in 2002; Zhao Jia 199 1 etc. They believe that Minnan dialect can be regarded as a language belonging to Sino-Tibetan language family, not a dialect, while Xiamen dialect, Taiwan dialect, Quanzhou dialect and Zhangzhou dialect are all dialects of Minnan language. However, these findings are still controversial.
Most linguists in China still regard Minnan as a dialect of Chinese, which is different from that of western scholars who regard Minnan, Cantonese and Wu as independent languages. Dialects with great differences in spoken language are not only found in Chinese, for example, German dialects in different regions are also very different, but they are still regarded as German dialects. Spoken Dutch is very close to German on the German-Dutch border, and can basically talk, but it is regarded as two different languages. Therefore, dialects and languages cannot be judged by differences in spoken languages. Moreover, although spoken Chinese varies greatly in different regions, it has a high degree of unity in writing, which is different from the significant differences in western languages.
Sino-Tibetan languages are Chinese, Minnan and Minnan.
