What were the Chongqing areas before Chongqing was directly under the Central Government?

Compared with other municipalities directly under the central government and prefecture-level cities in China, how should the city scope of Chongqing be defined? Chongqing itself is defined by the concepts of a main city and nine districts. Conceptually, the nine districts of the main city are the urban areas and suburbs of Chongqing, which are similar to Shanghai, but much smaller than Chengdu. If the city scope of Chongqing is defined, it is obviously more appropriate to define it according to the scope of the whole municipality directly under the Central Government, less according to the scope of the main city and nine districts, and more appropriate according to the scope of old Chongqing. There are nine districts in the main city of Chongqing. Except Yuzhong District, all other districts actually have suburbs. Therefore, the nine districts of Chongqing's main city can be regarded as a combination of urban and suburban areas.
