What public schools are there in Madrid?

Most immigrant children in Madrid are concentrated in public schools. The Socialist Party, the Left Alliance Party and the two major trade unions all demand that the government introduce laws and regulations to ensure the balanced distribution of immigrant children in public and private primary schools. However, Madrid's education commissioner, Prasad, said that schools with concentrated immigrants did not mean that the quality of schools was poor.

There are 54,579 immigrant students in Madrid, accounting for 12.4% of the total number. Among these immigrant students, 62% go to public schools, and only 38% children go to private or private schools. In Madrid, except for four urban areas (Villaverde, Villa de Vallecas, Vicálvaro and Barajas), most Spanish students are concentrated in private or private schools. In some urban areas, the difference between immigrants and local students is particularly obvious. In Retiro district, only 25% of local students attend public schools, while among immigrant children, the proportion is as high as 78%.

The two major trade union organizations demand that the education department change this phenomenon. A spokesman for the Left Alliance Party said that ten years ago, the number of students in public and private schools was roughly equal. Ten years later, the number of students in public schools has decreased by ten percentage points, and public schools are in danger of becoming a concentration point for immigrants. The president of the parents' association complained about the screening of students in some private schools. She believes that students should choose schools, not the other way around.
