Introduction to Huizhou dialect

Huizhou dialect, also known as local dialect, Boluo dialect and Dongjiang dialect. Mainly distributed in Huicheng District and Boluo County (Boluo dialect) of Huizhou City, in addition to Pingtan, Liangjing, Yonghu, Zhenlong, Qiuchang in Huiyang District, as well as villages on both sides of the Dongjiang River and Xizhijiang River in Huidong County, Longmen County, etc. There are also varying degrees of distribution. Huizhou dialect has a long history, and it still retains many original elements of ancient Chinese. Its phonology is rich, and overall it is similar to Cantonese. At the same time, it is influenced by a certain amount of Hakka, so it is quite unique. The linguistic classification of Huizhou dialect is controversial. Some scholars think it is a Cantonese language (Liu Shuxin), some scholars (Liu Zhenfa) think it is a language independent of Cantonese and other than Hakka, and some scholars think it is a type of Hakka; however, Residents who speak Huizhou dialect do not identify as Hakka, nor do they identify themselves as Hakka.
