His father was Zheng Zhilong, and his mother was named Tianchuan (usually considered to be Japanese)

In 1630, Zheng Chenggong returned to China with his uncle Zhiyan and lived in Zheng Mansion, Anping, Jinjiang. Zheng Zhilong hired famous teachers to teach him. In 1638, Zheng Chenggong entered Nan'an County to study as a junior student. He was highly appreciated and considered a member of the family. He was given the surname of the country (Zhu) and successfully changed his name. Therefore, he was respectfully called "Master of the surname of the country" at home and abroad. . In 1653 (the 10th year of Shunzhi in the Qing Dynasty), Emperor Yongli of the Southern Ming Dynasty (Zhu Youlang) named him "Prince of Yanping County".
