The origin of Wuyuan's name

There are different opinions about the explanation of Wuyuan county name.

Ci Hai recorded the meaning of "nothing":

First, the ancient star name, that is, "Nvsu", was used to pay tribute to women in the old days, such as Wu Huan Zhongtian;

Second, the name of water is also another name for Jinhua River.

The Modern Chinese Dictionary says this:

(1) Wujiang, water name, in Jiangxi;

(2) refers to the old Wuzhou, in Jinhua, Zhejiang.

Wuyuan's explanation can be roughly divided into three types:

First, it is named after "five waters and three sides around the city";

The second is named after "the old county is Xiuning, which once belonged to Wuzhou, and it is said that it should be Wu's daughter";

The third is named "Dongda County Water Flows into Wuzhou".

However, these three views are not perfect.

First, Wuyuan County does have a river surrounded by the city on three sides, but although this river is called Wujiang, it is the upper reaches of Le 'an River, which flows through Dexing, Leping and Poyang in Jiangxi Province, and finally merges into the Yangtze River and flows into Poyang Lake. It is called Wuyuan.

Secondly, Xiuning belonged to Wu Zhou in the Sui Dynasty, with a history of only 18 years, while Wuyuan County was established about 140 years later, separated by a dynasty, so it was impossible to pursue its name, let alone explain why it was called Wuyuan.

Third, there is indeed a big mountain at the junction of Wuyuan County and Zhejiang Province. It originates from the "water" in the mountains, flows to Hua Kai, Zhejiang, and passes through Quzhou, Lanxi and Jinhua to Fuchun River. This area was once called Wuzhou in Sui and Tang Dynasties. But although "water" flows to Wuzhou, it is also called Wu in Jinhua.
