As a very large hydropower station, how was the Three Gorges Dam built at that time?

The Three Gorges Hydropower Station is the largest hydropower station in the world and the largest engineering project ever constructed in China.

The Three Gorges Hydropower Station has more than ten functions, including shipping, power generation, planting, etc. The construction of the Three Gorges Hydropower Station was approved by the National People's Congress of China. Construction officially started1, water storage and power generation began, and was completed.

The Three Gorges Hydropower Station has a dam elevation of 185 meters, a water storage elevation of 175 meters, a reservoir length of more than 600 kilometers, a total investment of 95.46 billion yuan, and the installation of 32 hydropower units with a single capacity of 700,000 kilowatts.

The last hydropower unit of the Three Gorges Hydropower Station means that the Three Gorges Hydropower Station, with an installed capacity of 22.4 million kilowatts, has become the world's largest hydropower station and clean energy production base.

Construction Process

The Three Gorges Left Bank Power Station has 14 generating units. Units 4-6 and 10-14 have a total of 8 units. Alstom is responsible for the turbines, and Swiss ABB is responsible for the generators. The other six units (Units 1-3 and 7-9) are manufactured by the VGS consortium composed of Voith, GE and Siemens. When these international giants signed supply agreements, they all promised to transfer relevant technologies to Chinese domestic motor manufacturing companies free of charge.

The Three Gorges Right Bank Power Station has 12 units. Harbin Electric, Dongfang Electric and Alstom are each responsible for 4 units.

Among the six 700,000 units of the Right Bank Underground Power Station, Harbin Electric, Dongfang Electric and Alstom each built two more units. The power of the units is all 700,000 kilowatts, of which the rated output of the water turbine is 770MW.

The power transmission and transformation system of the Three Gorges Hydropower Station is constructed and managed by the State Grid Corporation of China. It is expected that 15 500-kilovolt high-voltage transmission lines will be installed to connect to various regional power grids.
