Hobart is the capital of the Australian state of Tasmania, a southern island. Hobart had been occupied by semi-nomadic Tasmanian Aboriginal tribes for many years before British settlement.

The first European settlement was a penal colony and defensive outpost at Wriston Bay on the east bank of the River Derwent. In 1804, Hobart moved to its current site in Sullivans Bay, making it Australia's second oldest city.

Classic buildings from the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian eras abound throughout the city, and together with more recent architectural forms, they form part of Hobart's unique landscape.

Hobart’s latitude and environment are similar to those of New Zealand. Winter is relatively cold and humid, with the lowest temperature reaching freezing in July and August. Winter lasts five months a year (from the end of May to October). Summer (December to February) is hotter at noon and cooler after the sun goes down. Many navigators, whalers and explorers have long regarded it as the gateway to the South. The current port of Hobart does not have so much industry, but more tourism.

The University of Tasmania is the only university in Hobart and if you want to study veterinary science you have to go to mainland Australia; it's not really a "global city" and doesn't have a lot of corporate headquarters , employment is a more realistic problem for university graduates, which may be one of Hobart's biggest disadvantages.

There are public and private hospitals here, but some surgeries may mean traveling to mainland Australia; daily necessities and groceries are more expensive than in mainland Australian cities. Leisure activities in Hobart will be relatively monotonous.

It's like a "ghost town" on a Sunday afternoon or weeknight. No opportunities for big shows, no teams in the major sports (except cricket) and no Australian rugby league team are sore points for many.

But housing in Hobart is still relatively cheap. You can buy a house for 1 million near the beach, and you can buy a farm 15-20 minutes’ drive from the central business district; it is relatively safe here.
