Where is Yangjiabu Village?

Yangjiabu Village is located at 1.5km south of Hanting District Government in Weifang City. Yangjiabu Village has 380 households 1.200 people, with a land area of 1.65 square kilometers, including cultivated land 1.00 hectares.

During the Warring States period, there were settlements on the present village ruins. Cultural relics of the Warring States period were unearthed in the west (now in the courtyard of Hanting Meteorological Bureau), and pottery and bronze mirrors of the Han Dynasty were unearthed in the south of the village. Yangjiabu was built in Ming Dynasty. In the second year of Hongwu (1369), Yang's ancestors moved to Shandong from Zitong County, Sichuan Province. He first lived in Xiadian Village (later called Bian Xia Village, once called Central Jiabu, commonly known as Old Zhuangzi) on the west bank of Hanting Society in Chongdao Township, Weizhou, and then moved to Xibu to set up a new village. Xijiabu, also known as Yangjiabu, is named after its location, surname and terrain.

Yangjiabu Village is one of the three woodblock New Year pictures in China and the birthplace of Weifang kites.

As early as the Ming Dynasty, Yang's ancestral home, Zhonghua Township, Zitong County, Sichuan Province, was the birthplace of New Year pictures. Yang Boda, born in a family of New Year pictures, is a famous local woodcarver. He is good at painting, stereotype and printing technology, as well as making lanterns and paper colors. After coming to Shandong, he resumed his ancestral business, combined with Shandong customs, created Yangjiabu woodblock New Year pictures, founded Tongshuntang painting shop, specializing in New Year pictures, and also operated folk handicrafts such as kites, lanterns, paper colors, fans and cloth pendants. For more than 600 years, this craft has been passed down from generation to generation, and talents have come forth in large numbers, constantly inheriting and innovating.

Yangjiabu woodblock New Year pictures have a wide range of themes. There are exorcism, auspiciousness, customs and people's feelings, historical stories, myths and legends, novels and operas, current affairs humor, entertainment, landscapes and flowers, auspicious birds and animals, as well as maps, calligraphy, weighing songs and so on. The main forms are civil and military door gods, fan paintings, door-blocking judgments, kang paintings, window decorations, nave, statues and so on. Exaggerated modeling, full composition, free imagination, symbolic meaning, bright colors and combination of pictures and texts. The process is divided into pattern making, woodcut, color matching, product baking and so on.

Yangjiabu kites have a wide range of materials, profound meanings and diverse shapes. There are more than 300 kinds of traditional kites, which can be roughly divided into auspiciousness, longevity, peace, magic, love, flowers and birds, etc. Form can be divided into plate type, hard airfoil type, soft airfoil type, chord type and cylinder type. Each type is divided into five types: super-large, large, medium, small and micro. Yangjiabu kite and woodblock New Year pictures are married, forming a big faction. During the Qianlong and Jiaqing years in the Qing Dynasty, the village entered a prosperous stage, and there was a scene of "every household printing New Year pictures and every household wearing kites", which was called "hundreds of painting shops, thousands of paintings and tens of thousands of drawing boards". Together with Yangliuqing in Tianjin and Taohuawu in Suzhou, it is called the three major painting cities in China. During the Guangxu period, every winter, art dealers gathered and competed to buy, and the painting shop in the village stayed up all night to make New Year pictures. There are more than 5,000 art dealers, using more than 20,000 reams of paper and printing 70 million pictures. At that time, artists Liu Mingjie and Yang Zhonghai once created satirical and humorous New Year pictures reflecting current politics, such as Empress Dowager Cixi fled to Chang 'an, feeling dignified, which broke through the theme category of traditional New Year pictures. In the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China, the New Year pictures industry was once depressed. Dongdashun Painting Shop invited folk painters, Yang and Yang Wandong to innovate the New Year pictures and produce practical woodblock New Year pictures such as maps, moon cakes, songs and decals. He also introduced the interest of literati painting into New Year pictures, and created Indus, Four Fragrant Flowers and Birds, and Four Screens of Landscape. The printing process has been improved, and the works are simple and elegant, which can be sold all the year round and achieve good economic benefits. Later, influenced by the war, political movement and the Cultural Revolution, the drawing board was destroyed and the New Year pictures were banned.

Since 1980s, Yangjiabu New Year pictures have been thoroughly remoulded. Yangjiabu Woodblock New Year Pictures Research Institute was established to rescue endangered species and restore family production. 1986, the earliest and largest kite factory in China was first built. 1500 copies (sets) of Yangjiabu New Year pictures, such as the Eight Immortals Picture, New Year pictures lens and New Year pictures restoration, were ordered by the Ministry of Culture and distributed to embassies of more than 20 countries for international cultural exchange projects. During this period, many folk artists went abroad to perform New Year pictures or kite-making skills. Party and state leaders, foreign friends and cultural celebrities have also visited Yangjiabu many times for inspection and guidance, and tourists flocked to observe and appreciate Yangjiabu woodblock New Year pictures. Yangjiabu has become a hot spot of folk tourism in Weifang.

There are a large number of outstanding New Year pictures and kite artists in Yangjiabu Village, including Yang, who is praised by experts as "China Kite King". Yang Luoshu, awarded the title of "Master of Folk Arts and Crafts" by UNESCO, is known as the king of Chinese New Year pictures.

In 2006, Yangjiabu woodblock New Year pictures were included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage list.
