The researchers interviewed 20 employees in China and 20 employers who settled here. The questions asked included their hopes and dreams before they arrived in New Zealand, their leisure activities, community participation, retirement plans, family and family members, and experiences of discrimination. ? According to the report, China immigrants rely on China people's network to seek employment and get advice and help on settlement. ? Their non-Chinese network is limited both professionally and socially, and few people know many new friends. ? According to the report, immigrants from China do not feel welcome, nor do they see the benefits of joining local professional groups or business associations.
Katherine Li, an immigrant from China who settled in New Zealand in 2008, said that the only jobs she could find in Auckland were restaurants and cafes in China.
Language is a problem for most immigrants. Almost three-quarters of employers said that they found that using English to communicate became a major obstacle to local business development. Most employees also said that their professional skills were not used at work. However, almost everyone who has been trained in New Zealand has found that mastering English helps to improve employment opportunities and expand local networks.
On the positive side, respondents said that they like Auckland to be less crowded and less polluted, and they can enjoy more personal freedom and opportunities than when they were in China.
This report is part of a comprehensive research project on immigration. The project will study the immigration experience of five major countries of origin, namely Britain, China, India, South Korea and South Africa. The report is the first part of the project.
