In this passage, Confucius evaluates his three students, and the evaluation criterion is "benevolence". He said that some of them can manage the military, some can manage internal affairs, and some can handle diplomacy. In Confucius' view, although they have their own specialties, all these specialties must serve the political needs of etiquette and rule by virtue, and must be based on benevolence and virtue.
