Brief introduction of Hangzhou dialect

Hangzhou dialect refers to the local dialect used in Hangzhou urban area and some suburbs, which is different from other dialects in Greater Hangzhou area. Hangzhou dialect is also called Jiangnan Mandarin because it is located in the south of the Yangtze River and close to the northern Mandarin. Because of geographical considerations, Hangzhou dialect is classified as a small piece of Wu dialect in Taihu Lake. As far as the language itself is concerned, Hangzhou dialect also has the basic characteristics of Wu dialect, but due to several waves of northward migration represented by the ruling center of Song Dynasty, the local language system has undergone great changes and gradually appeared in the south of the Yangtze River. Hangzhou dialect is mainly distributed in the urban area of Hangzhou, excluding the suburbs of Hangzhou and Xiaoshan, Yuhang and Binjiang districts. It is conservatively estimated that the population of China who speaks Hangzhou dialect as their mother tongue is between 6.5438+0.2 million and 6.5438+0.5 million.

Hangzhou dialect is not widely used, generally reaching Xiasha in Yuhang in the east, Qiantang River in the south, Wuyun Mountain and Zhuantang in the west, Chen Gong Bridge in the north to Sandun in Yuhang, and Jianqiao Bridge in the northeast to Qiaosi in Yuhang. In this range, about one million people speak Hangzhou dialect. Hangzhou is the largest city in Zhejiang province, but Hangzhou dialect is one of the smallest dialect points in Zhejiang Wu dialect.

As for the reason why Hangzhou dialect is different from Wu dialect, the academic community has long concluded that several northern immigrants such as the Southern Song Dynasty moved their capital to Yongjia uprising three times and the Eight Banners stationed in the garrison and integrated into the language. It is generally believed that the relocation of the capital in the Southern Song Dynasty laid the basic framework of Hangzhou dialect today and played a decisive role in the formation of Hangzhou dialect. Some recent linguistic studies have raised objections to this. But so far, it is still academic knowledge to move the capital to create Hangzhou dialect in the Southern Song Dynasty.
